I'm looking into putting together an NAS system on my home network.

I'm looking at using the linksys NAS200. using two 1tb sata hard drive on a raid 0 config. then probably add 500-750gb usb external drives attached to this linksys device.

or am i better off using the Linksys NSLU2 and running a "slug" firmware hack?

I've read around that some drives are slow on the file transfer rate. some crashes or stop responding after a long duration of file transfer.
I would just like some reviews from ppl that have their own NAS. the do's and dont's.

my main use of this nas drive is to stream ripped dvd at the most bit rate i can to a ps3.

Cant really say much about personal NAS devices, but the NetApp device we have here at work is a BEAST. We currently have about 500 Tbs of redundant space and when the disk groups and LUNs are created properly the speed is insane.

why in the world would you use RAID0 for a NAS. You probably want RAID1 or JBOD. With JBOD, at least if a drive fails you'll more or less have half of your files.

If a drive fails in Raid0, you'll only have half of every file which pretty much means you are screwed. Besides, the ever so slight performance increase you would see with RAID1 would be gone since you are using it over the network.

And check the benchmarks, a lot of these devices are pretty slow at transferring data.

Do NOT go RAID 0 if you are looking for storage, one failure and all of your data is gone.

And another vote to not go RAID 0.

Why are you going NAS?

Do you really have multiple people going on this ?

Otherwise, might as well go USB.
