question about upgrading dram« » Reply  Edit

i have an hp laptop with windows xp and 1 gb of dram, it's almost 2 years old if it matters. when watching movies that i've downloaded (file sizes around 700 mb) the movies will start getting glitchy after a while. i'll pause the movie for a couple seconds, and after that it'll be running smoothly again. i asked a buddy of mine and he said it sounds like i might not have enough dram for such a large file.

so, i'm thinking about upgrading to 2 or 3 gb. would 3 be overkill? other than watching movies i occasionally screw around with photoshop, which seems to run a little slow. if i was to do 3, i'd have to do a stick of 2 and a stick of 1. would there be any issues with running uneven sticks? it's going to cost me about $20/gb.

more is always good. 2gb should be fine with xp. although is the movie is glitchy I suspect you have a slow pc in general. try another video file to see if it plays glitch free. better yet try this:

Download this movie file frome here: (It's an HD movie file about 80mb)

http://download.microsoft.com/...0.exe

you have to run it though. If it can play that then you should be fine.

Some low performance laptops have issues with having individual DIMMs over 1GB and total over 2GB, so I'd just get a 2x1GB kit, since most likely you have 2x512 right now.

alright, i've just had a few so i'll have to watch that video some other time. however, i've never noticed any kind of videos getting glitchy until recently when i started downloading entire movies. my comp has a 1.6 gig amd turion processor (dual core) and a nvidia geforce 6150 video card (which i hear is probably built in to the motherboard, so it can't be replaced). my buddy did mention that the glitchyness could be cuz of a shitty video card.

as for going over 2 gb of dram, when i was buying the laptop the highest upgrade offered from hp was 2 gb. i'm not sure if it was because of some system limitation or some other reason, but crucial sells sticks of dram as high as 2 gb a piece that'll fit. i can fit 2 sticks into my comp (right now it's 512x2).
