Ok, I've been wanting a DSLR for quite some time now. And after reading countless threads and reviews, I've come to a conclusion that I want either the Canon Rebel XTI or the Nikon D60. Which one would be best suited for a beginner looking to get into photography as a hobby?

as an xti user, one thing to look into is nikon's ability to do some flash jargen with wireless flashes. I believe canons you have to purchase something different...

yea, i heard of that. From what I've been hearing, the Nikon has a few more bells and whistles compared to the Canon. Plus I heard the lenses were cheaper and better for the Nikon?

I'm glad someone posted something like this.
I'm in the same dilemma. I don't know anything about the xti but I do know that the D60 is brand spankin' new to the nikon line up and doesn't have too many lenses and isn't compatible with too many lenses already available. I'm not sure on the exact number, but you should look into it. I'm also in on more feedback on this thread

in my 5 month stint w/ my xti, the lenses appear to be cheaper. may want to ask someone with a little bit more experience though.

Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Mo...
Both have advantages, both have limitations, both have the ability to take awesome photos. Try 'em both and see which one you like best. |

yea, i guess they both seem like great cameras. I went to costco earlier and seemed to like the feel of the Nikon a little better than the Canon. I'll be picking up the d60 later on tonight. If I don't like it, I can exchange it and get the XTI.
Costco return policy FTW!!

how about an XSi?
the XSi is one of the newest canon dslr and is also a canon eos rebel like the XTi i think its about the same price of a d60(not sure) plus the kit lens comes with IS which is definitely an improvement from the XTi kit lens

Well I got an Xti this past christmas and I like it a lot. Its definitely fine for a 'beginner' 'cause its not much more complicated than a higher end point and shoot. All you need to do is get used to where and how the settings are adjusted which isn't hard to get acclimated to at all. As long as you know at least some basics about photography its really not too overwhelming to use a DSLR unless you're trying to dive into the deep end and go straight to Manual mode.
As far as Nikons are concerned.. I've heard from some other people saying that they like the ergonomics of the Nikons a lot more and feel they are slightly more intuitively built. But.. that can also be personal preference. There are definitely fanatics for either manufacturer so I honestly don't think you can go wrong. Go to a store where they've got both cameras and see if you like one more than the other. Now the Xsi is in the same price range as the d60 and it does have a few new features over the Xti (more MP's & LIVE-VIEW!). I really want to know if live-view on a DSLR is as awesome as I would think it would be. Although.. I do have a point-and-shoot for that now. Cliff's: I don't think you can go wrong with either. Go check 'em out at a store and see if you think one is easier to navigate or feels better to you.

I have owned an XSi for the past month or so and will vouch for the live view. The 170 degree viewing is really nice for those really low (or high) shots
Also, the 3" screen over the XTi sold me on the XSi Even though the XTi is much cheaper than the XSi, I am very pleased with my decision I love my Canon Powershots over the Coolpix's I have owned, so I didn't even really consider Nikon
