iPhone Update Firmware, Contact Info, Restore, Jailbreak« » Reply  Edit

Thought I'd mention this for people who are unsure:

Since I've owned my Iphone, I've had it jailbroken from http://www.jailbreakme.com. I was unsure that once I upgraded from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4, something would go haywire and I'd lose some critical information.

From what I was told by a friend in the computer industry is that the only way to update the firmware version and delete the jailbreakme software on a jailbroken phone was to:
*back up all relative information
*click 'Restore' in iTunes, and let it takes it's coarse
*update firmware
*start over

This wasn't the case. First and foremost I was concerned about losing all my contacts. I have several hundred. Second was all my email settings, gmail and a hack to get hotmail to work. Third was possibly bricking the phone.

After a bit of investigating on the ol www, I stumbled upon a piece of freeware called IPhone PC Suite, which will back up all relative information about your phone, and store it on your PC. That can be found here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/96....html

Although it has quite a few features, I used it strictly to back up my contacts incase something went bad.

Second, I simply plugged my phone into my computer and went into the Info Tab>Contacts>Windows Contacts clicked 'apply' then 'merged' the information to my PC in Windows Contacts. So now there are two different backups.

Third, I simply clicked on the 'Update' button in iTunes and let it run it's coarse. The jailbreakme software was deleted, as hoped, and all my contacts and settings were still in place.

Now that my phone is 1.1.4, I will be installing ZiPhone to do all the jailbreaking.

Hope this little thread may help someone out in the future who may be unsure about what to do and the end results.

Aloha!

Wow you really complicated this.....
When you upgrade the firmware nothing changes exept the firmware and you have to jailbreak again.

Contacts - Easy, back it up w/ Outlook or Windows Address Book.
Jailbreak - use iLiberty, much better then ZiPhone and doesnt downgrade the bootloader and doesnt put Zibri's blog on the phone.

you did all that for nothing.
All you have to do is sync the phone using itunes then do a backup option. which will backup all contacts, notes, alarm settings, maps, pictures, etc.

when you update/restore your phone, plug it back into itunes and it will ask you to restore the settings. your phone will be exactly how it was.

ziphone isn't that great because there's iLiberty. But i suggest using pwnage on any firmware.

like stc said, use the sync on itunes to sync the contacts to windows address books.
