I am looking to purchase my first lens within the next day or two. I'm still really new to the photography scene. Since I don't have 3 grand to drop on several lenses at one time, I want to reassure I am making the right decision for my first purchase.
50mm f/1.4 I decided against the 1.8 due to the complaints of it's "cheap plastic body / feel". Also, it seems the 1.8 is a step below with the quality of the pictures. Just curious to what HT's favorite "general" lens is / the one mounted to your camera most of the time. I know we all share the interest in shooting cars which it seems the 50 is great for. Not to forget portraits which I can't wait to shoot my daughter

I like the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens ($489.95) for "general purpose" duty. They have the 3rd gen image stabilization and cover a good focal length. Then you can buy a nice telephoto zoom like the 70-200mm f4 or 2.8 and not have much overlap.
There's also the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens ($960.00), but that's more money than I would want to spend.

I assume you shoot Nikon.
My absolute favorite right now is my Nikkor 17-55 f2.8. I also like my 50 f1.8! Don't just listen from people on the internet and see for yourself in person how they differ in build quality then make the decision if the price difference is worth it.

I have a Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 on my camera most of the time. How old is your daughter? Shooting little kids is challenging since they don't stay still very long and they may not pose the way you want.

Sigma 30mm F/1.4 I love it. It is the equivalent of a 50mm on a film camera which is an awesome focal length. Plus it's pretty sharp 1.4 so me likey.
I am not a fan of 50mm on a crop body. But that's probably just because it doesn't fit my shooting style. If I had a full frame camera such as a film or a Canon 5D then I no doubt would have a 50mm F/1.4. I do have a Canon 50mm F/1.8 and it isn't very sharp at 1.8 but sharpening in photoshop does help to some extent. I also spend a fare amount of time with my Sigma 10-20mm on the camera. I love this lens. Truth is if I could only keep one it would be the 30mm.

Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 is one NICE piece of glass!! It's my only glass that I own and I sold the Nikon 50mm f1.8, Sigma 17-35mm f2.8, Sigma 10-20mm, Nikon 55-200mm, and my Nikon 18-55mm because these lenses weren't ever used once I got the 28-75.

New to photography, why drop $400 on a 50mm 1.4 when you can get a 50mm 1.8 it's great lens, sure it's like a toy, but for 80 dollars I wouldn't really care if it stops working in five months. From what I read it's actually a great lens for the money, something that will get you settled for portraits.
If you like the lens and you feel you need to upgrade then do so. But spread your lens arsenal before dropping so much money. I'm not saying you should always go for the cheapest lens because that's not how things are, but in this case, the 50mm 1.8 is a go. Btw my 50mm 1.8 is on the mail it should arrive Tuesday if you wish you can wait and I'll get you some sample shots. |

Canon 17-55 2.8 IS. Sold a Tamron 28-75 for it, which was a great lens for the money, just not wide enough.

I used the Canon 35mm f/1.4L for a week and I didn't want to give it back.
I wouldn't mind having a 50mm 1.4 but personally I need something wider. Having both would rock though lol. |

I'm planning on upgrade my 50mm 1.8 to the 1.4...
seems like canon's 17-85 is a good all around lens especially for the money.
