what is your suspension setup?« » Reply  Edit

yes, i realize this idea has been covered a thousand times. no response in previous responses fit my needs exactly (pretty much everyone other than me runs sways). let's talk.

after years of tracking, i've come to what i feel is a pretty balanced setup. i'm currently running 650f/750r on buddy club racing specs with NO swaybars on an EG. i've NEVER tried swaybars. i've started a few discussions in the past as to why add the weight of a swaybar + hardware when you still have room to work with in your spring rates, but nobody had a clear answer.

i have a hankering to toss on a rear bar (or just spend some money, i don't know) just to see what happens. would it be smarter to toss on a front bar (kind of a pita) at the same time? if the car is a bit tail happy for a weekend, i can live... hell, i can even just disconnect it after a session.

i guess my question is: will my car, with the current springs and a rear bar be ridiculously out of balance or not?

what are you running? how does it feel? if i'm happy with my current balance should i forget the whole idea?

I'm actually runnning the same Buddy Club Racing Specs with the same spring rates on my DC2 Integra. I am running the stock GS-R front sway bar with an ITR 22mm rear swaybar. The car was very tail happy last year but this year with the addition of a rear spoiler the car has become pretty neutral.

I'm running 560/450lb springs on a 98ex coupe. 24mm front bar with 22mm adjustable rear bar. The car feels very neutral and works well for me and my current skill level. The rear end is loose enough to break loose predictably, but not loose enough to be tail-happy.

dc2
450F 600R stock gsr swaybars

car being used for autox purposess and it feels great. very predictable oversteer. altough many will opt for a bigger bar with this same set up i feel im yet to encounter the need for more rotation. but im also just starting to really push this set up.

On a side note, don't forget to take into account your alignment specs. They have a lot to do with the cars balance and feel. You could have 2 cars with the identical suspensions, sway bars, tires, etc. but depending on the toe and camber settings they could handle completely different.

yup. also wheelbase. dc2/4 chassis ar elike stretched limos. i have 650/600 on the ef with the st rear bar on full stiff and no front bar. everyone says im nuts but the car feels awsome to me. -4/-3 on the camber and 0* toe
i have found sway bar rotation is a progressive feel. where as spring rotation is a lot more abrupt

EH2
omni 12/10k (going to 10/8k for DD compfort)
21mm front/22mm ITR rear sway
-2.3 front camber. 1/16 toe out
-1.5 rear camber. 0 toe out

i used the car for primarily autox and the car rotates awesome compaired to my other set up choices(no front sway/19mm rear) even HPDE / lapping days it was soo much better.. thats my .2 cents

i am trying to make it a point to pay better attention to the heat across my tires... suppose i should tune there if i'm happy with the overall balance.

now... to get to the track... that's been a tough one this season.

your car is rolling way too much with that soft of a setup, probably looks close to a stock car out on track.

Add a front and rear bar and the car will be more flat, and flat is a good thing

Mike, you rode in my car for 3 hours, it had front and rear swaybars, I only had 400f/600r springs, which is why it may have still rolled a little bit.

From what I have been reading in race tuning books, having some sort of swaybar is a good thing. Maybe not a gigantic one, but something to keep the car flatter in the turns.

I'd say that as for how much of one, how to adjust your springs, the alignment specs, whether or not to run a front one, those issues are up for discussion. But adding a rear bar seemed like an obvious YES in all of my research.

you're joking with this comment, right? i've got pictures of the same corner before and after these rates and the difference is night and day. i know they aren't as high as they could be, but they're pretty much as high as i want to go on a car that is driven on the street (i just sold my daily, but daily to me is [2.6 miles round trip] at most twice a week when i can't commute by bike). i suppose in that sense, adding bars would be beneficial...

Mikey, I think you rode in my POS way back when you were s a student. CRX, 375/500 front and rear on Koni sport. Full soft front, full stiff rear. Stock front bar with poly endlinks just tight enough to not spin by hand. ST rear bar set on medium. -3*f/-1.5*r camber. -1/8f/0r toe. With the B16, car is more pushy than I would like. With the stock motor, it was just about right.

LOL not suicidal but harry to say the least. This year with the aero it is neutral and I can control when I want the back to come out.

My alignment specs are -2.5 camber in front with 1/16 total toe out(1/8 per side)
-2 camber rear with zero toe.

Mike, I can't help you out on spring/swaybar suggestions since I'm still trying to solve my issues, but I do have an ITR rear swaybar with poly bushings you're welcome to borrow to test out. My car/swaybar is currently in Fredericksburg. I'm going to test out the ASR race bar so I won't need the ITR bar for a while.

yes mike i was being a bit over dramatic, but simply to get your attention.

Roll stiffness can be done with sway bars, and it is needed

right, but my whole question is really "how f'd will i be if i just toss on a rear bar?" i don't like "hairy" therefore i don't think i'm gonna do it. will i be able to get every last tenth out of my car? no, but then again i'm not racing so it matters little
