air density psi question ...« » Reply  Edit

hey whats up everyone, i just got off the phone with my tuner .. and he scared me

i have a stock d16y8 that i'm going to turbo, he was tellin me that with stock cast internals .. any time my engine knocks once its turbod .. i can say goodbye to it.

he then informed me about different air density .. so he was sayin since my car is gunna be tuned in the mountains ... 10 psi here .. may be like 15 psi at sea level.. and runnig 15psi on a 10psi tune is not good.

so what do i do about this? i want to drive my car anywhere in the world without risking detonating my engine just because of air density. this was the first time i've heard about this ... what do u guys do? i wanted to go to the beach this summer.. but now i guess i can't b/c i dont wanna blow up my car .. wtf?EW?!!

your tuner is gay. unless he's tuning it on the top of mount everest, there's no way in hell the atmospheric pressure is 5 psi difference. 2nd, if its being tuned for 10 psi, the little difference in atmospheric pressure (or air density) will not have that great of an impact. i'd suggest taking the car somewhere else.

seriously. Besides the fact that air density has more to do with humidity and temperature than anything......you could have an air density of sea level depending on the conditions of the day, barometric pressure, humidity, and temp.

Aside from the fact that State college, PA can't be any more than 2k ft above sea level, at best. I'm willing to bet standard pressure there on any given day is something like 14.5psi, vs. 14.7psi at sea level, lol.

That tuner is blowing billowing shitsmoke out of his ass. Avoid him.

if he's a good tuner and keeps a good, safe, but not overly rich afr throughout the range, especially partial throttle boost, you should be fine.

1) your engine wont knock if you get it tuned properly
2) if its tuned at 10 psi in the mountains, even if you come down to sea level, your wastegate will still regulate it to 10 psi, it wont let it go over for what your tuned at.
3) what will you get if you tune with jeff evans? youl get a guy who wont tell you your motor will blow up if you drive down hill.
4) go get a tune somewhere else.
