What turbo would be best for my application?« » Reply  Edit

In the market for a new turbo now that my current one has blown a turbine seal.
just cant afford downtime of a rebuild being its my daily.
I have talked to many people all with different ideas and suggestions.
Yet havent settled on a certain turbo or even a brand for that matter.
to get an idea heres the motor setup...
-9.0:1 81mm stock sleeve Ls/vtec, forged pistons/rods.
-B16 head, stock cc turbo valves, stock springs, and Gsr cams.
-Blox intake manifold, 2.5" ic piping to a 27x12x3" FMIC.
-ramhorn manifold RCAUTOWORKS 3" turboback exhaust (standard 5 bolt DP flange).
-the fuel system can handle more power than the sleeves ever will so im fine in that department.
My new goal after the turbo has been installed and car has been retuned is 450whp.
+Non-Ball bearing, I know its best but funds are low.
+being im not sleeved im not looking to push my goal at all down the road so a turbo good to 500wheel would be just fine.
+Companies I have been leaning towards are Borg Warner, Precision, and garrett.
-Im interested in the Borg units being they are reasonably priced and have been meeting or beating the competitors in power.
-precision because of their reliability and undeniable quality
-and of course garrett b.c they have been around forever and while still on the cheap side as far as price goes they are built well.

I have done a fair amount of research and still have not come to any firm decision.
Please just give me a few suggestions as far as waht turbo would be best for my setup and goals.
thanks, Jeff

SC61, many people have good success with this turbo. Im currently using one myself but not fully finished yet for a tuned.

Hopefully ill get around 400 on pump and whatever race gas can get me, my set-up is similar to yours.

Yea Im really interested in the Borg warner units but cannot find any data other than comparison dyno charts...
which do little to no help when selecting a turbo.
and the Sc61 doesnt mean much being its a series of turbos.
Knowing they are great turbos... but are they the best for my setup?

Well sometime if you want something good for yourself, you should be doing some research than.

There plenty of people running Precision SC61, there a few different trim to the turbo but not much different. The biggest exhaust wheel will make a little more power and a little later spool.

You should punch in sc61 in the search and pages of result would come up to keep to busy for a few hours.

In the end it your car, so you have to pick which one you want not what someone tell you to pick.

do you intend to reach 450whp on pump gas all the time, or race gas sparingly?

If you plan to run race gas when you want the higher numbers, another good turbo for you is the Borg Warner S256 or S258. I'm planning on pushing my S256 to ~450whp but i have the advantage of runnning E85 (105oct).

the s256 is a great turbo and yes its not a ball bearing turbo but its not much cheaper than your typical ball bearing turbo. great solution but i dont think its in his budget.

Does borg warner have a site containing information on all of their turbo?

The answer will make or break your turbo choice. What's it going to be?

the borg units dont offer a good "in between" for my price range so Im leaning towards the garrett 60-1 and I would like to be able to make it on pump gas.

Wouldn't a Garrett T3/TO4E 57 trim w/ .63 a/r work pretty good and get you close to 450WHP on pump, I am doing a similar build and wanting to get 400WHP on 93 octane with that turbo and would think that it would allow for 450WHP?
