Rod Bearing Size. Need help from the pro's.« » Reply  Edit

I am building an all motor LS/VTEC.

I just ordered all yellow bearings from acura because that is what my block and rods called for when matching them up.

The machine shop said they bored the big end of the rods to the next size because the holes were not a perfect circle.

So I just finished plastigage all the rod bearings with the yellows. They were all .038. The OEM Acura Manual calls for .020-.038.

Should I order the next bigger bearing or just keep these bearings? They are in spec, but I guess they are the loose side of the spectrum is that correct?

Here is a picture: (they were all the same)

*** WELL after reading over ENDYNE's website on their 2.0L ALL MOTOR build, they have all their bearings at 0.0015" which is .038mm, exactly where I am at. So I guess I am good to go

I don't trust plastigauge at all. Since the clearance is so close to max spec, I would just mic it and get exact numbers instead of trusting what the machine shop said. This way you know the exact specs and you can make a decision from there.

tunnel bearing bore - main journal diameter = bearing wall thickness(refer to honda's charts)...i usually assemble the bearings within the bores and always re-measure again...check for squish around 12pm and 6pm, 3pm and 9pm...

note: try to use .0001" resolution mic's and bore gage...

haha...im in stoney creek now myself its nice out here man so peaceful and relaxing...opening up a mini shop down here soon...

yeah im a dumbass lol...connecting rod bearing bore - rod journal diameter = bearing wall thickness sorry a little drunk over here...lowenbrau for the win!

but you will need to be careful how you stretch your rod bolts out before going any further in this step...theres a certain way to do it so your rod bolts never let go

Kind of tough to understand if you don't do this often haha. I will try to get some visuals for you so you can see what this means. Another great way to do this is to take it back to the machine shop and tell them you want them to do this if you don't have the time to learn. If you take the time to learn though, it will definately benefit you.
