Default over revved, vtec turning off and on

this happened to my friends stock 99 gsr last saturday night. we were on the freeway and he missed 4th gear and accidentally went into 2nd form 3rd. i was behind him when he did this and there was a LOT of black smoke for a few seconds.
he pulled over right away and everything seemed to working normal, idling fine, no ticking sound or anything like that.
today he calls me and says that his vtec keeps turning off and on. he said everything sounds normal when driving but only in vtec does it start acting up.

any ideas ?

sounds like bent valves...slightly bent not enough to make noise. a friend of mine went from 2nd to 1st instead of 3rd on his type r and bent valves...you would have to put your head on the valve cover to even hear it

the head needs to be pulled and everything inspected. this is common when drivers get excited and zing a motor. any number of things can happen, it sounds like to me that the motor is losing compression. take it to a tech that can show you what happened in reality, replace the bad parts and learn how not to go into 2nd from 3rd at 8500 rpm!
