Long shot but wanted to know if anyone knew anything about security cameras.

My dad was looking at one on costco.com but I had a feeling it was a POS.

Tried to look up reviews online but didn't find any relevant ones.

http://www.costco.com/Browse/P...=&s=1

I did a search on google and I found a website

http://www.surveillance-video.com/

Been browsing through there and I see some Nuvico camera bundle/sets with the whole package.

Anyone know if either of these are good/bad and//or know of any forums dedicated to surveillance?

thanks.

Not sure what your price range is but I've used Axis IP cameras before. It gets interesting (read: potentially expensive) if you want to capture the video long term but if you just want something to view it will work fine out of the box.

Their 212 "fisheye" is my favorite unit.

I'm using a bunch of the axis 216FD cameras here at the office. I love 'em

PoE is a wonderful thing for cameras also, no power outlets needed only a cat5 cable drop (and a PoE switch)

I'm thinking of getting this unit:

http://www.costco.com/Browse/P...opnav=

I found a review by one person that's been real happy with it. There are alot of people, esp people in the business, that put down these costco units because they lose out on your business.

We use these at my work http://www.linksys.com/servlet...apper
They are good for small systems.

Ever get any power drops with PoE?

I've been really impressed with PoE; no issues with dropping power so far. My switch has 12 PoE ports and I'm pushing power to 7 cameras and a WAP. The WAP is on 6ft of cable. The cameras are all on 100ft + cable runs.

Cool! I am going to have to try that out. Thanks

Do not get the Costco one. Seriously. My mom has two friends who have purchased the security thing for their homes, and on numerous occasions, it has proven to not work well.

- The capture angle isn't that great, so somebody can sneak around and cover the camera with tape if mounted in a spot easy to access.

- The quality ain't that great. Somebody broke into the people's car, stole their stereo, but the camera didn't capture an image clear enough to be able to identify the person.

I would consider BNC cameras (composite video) rather than IP based cameras. You can get better video quality, as well as outdoor cameras for less than 100$ each. All you need is a PCI card and some DVR software, and you are set.

I think the non-costco units will have the same problem. It's like saying, "Don't buy a Honda because my neighbor's Honda got broken into. Well, if your neighbor owned a Toyota, perhaps it would have happened as well.

Also, all security cameras aren't great - none of them (unless you have seriously deep pockets) will record like your Sony HDR-SR7, for example.

And I'm sure you can use tape and cover up the non-costco cameras and people will be able to walk around them too.

People have the expectations these little cameras can read license plates and be able to ID faces. You have to have resonable expectations with the security systems you buy.

That's not a very good analogy... at all. You "think[ing]" that "non-costco units will have the same problem" doesn't means it's true. This is a problem inherent to the security camera Costco sells, but maybe not other ones. Who knows? I, personally haven't tried a handful of cameras, so I'm trying to keep my mouth shut and giving my input only on what I have seen. Do you have experience with security cameras Gary? If so, please speak so.

speco has some bullet cameras that have with IR that will see up to like 40 feet in the total darkness for less than 200 each.

You are the one tying costco with security systems not being all that great. I've heard good things about the $3k q-see system that is for sale at Costco. If you go back and reread what you wrote, you're bashing those costco system and then giving reasons why they suck. Like someone putting tape over the cameras (you can do that with any camera).

I do have a security system with video surveillance that I built myself. I've gone through about a dozen of these cameras. Your camcorder will do better than any of them.
