so i'm trying to get my friends' hyosung gv-250 back running agian. it has been sitting since december, battery died, low gas. so i charge it up last night and fill tank this morning, and try to start the bike. it'll only turn over when the choke is engaged and starts by reving up to 3.5 4000 before falling down to a low idle. if you disengage the choke or give the bike any gas it'll die. also, after filling the tank, the needle went down to E instead of up to F. it was working proper before the bike was left to sit. any help or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

Is your choke a lever or is it a switch? if its a lever, feather it after the bike fires up and let it warm up for a few minutes at 1500-2250 rpms. Then after shes warmed up blip the throttle to make sure you have good throttle response. if she still dies after that you have fuel delivery issues of some kind. Right now it sounds like your carbs are flooded, you'll need to wait until some of the gass evaps to try it again.

If its been sitting for 5-6 months, the carbs have to be taken apart and cleaned up.

Gas will turn to varnish and start blocking carb jets within 6-8 weeks.

thanks for all the help, carb cleaning to be underway shortly along with what looks like a pepcock replacement as it seems to be weeping gas.

Def sounds like the idle jet in the carb is clogged. I had the same issue once before.

I wouldn't say a rebuild is necessary unless the seals are wrecked. Might just need to be pulled apart and cleaned thoroughly.

On most newer carbs, this is a 'rebuild' There's not a lot to replace... just disassemble and clean thoroughly.

I like to soak everything in simple green for a few hours, rinse with water, and dry with compressed air - make sure you blow out all the jets.

Yeah, my dad is a carburator like expert and he builds them for our race car along with many other race teams at the local dirt track and when I think about rebuild its mostly tear apart, get water build-up/dirt out and replace anything that could be going bad. Most times he just buys a rebuild kit and rebuilds them. i mean its already torn apart, why not?

The problem is most "rebuild kits" include junk parts.

I cleaned up a set of carbs for my '95 FZR the other day, didnt replace a thing. Everything was cleaned and reused.

Yea true, my dad doesn't alway use all the parts in those kits but in like the quadrajet carbs some race cars run they have little filters in them that has to be replaced along with some other little things that gets dirt and junk in them. Im not sure how close a car carb is with a bike but I they have to be somewhat similar..lol
