I have a 91 Wagon and 98% of the time that I start the car, the starter makes a grinding noise. It kinda sounds like when the car is running & you try to start the car.
The car doesnt always want to start right away either. It just turns over and once I let go of the key and try again, it starts but with the grinding sound. I don't want to replace the starter until it stops starting the car altogether. Unless I have to.
Is this a sign of the starter going bad?
I checked the bolts to make sure the starter is fully tightened and it was.
Would a weak battery cause this?
My battery is 4 years old and needs a jump everyonce in awhile.
I know I need to replace that, but I don't have the money right now.

Thanks for any replys and if you have anything else I should check, just post it up.

THANKS!

sounds like the starter plunger is not extending far enough to fully engage the flywheel. replace the starter now or you may be replacing the fly wheel and starter.

does the grinding noise always happen? or stay on for awhile?

if it happens all the time, then ur starter would be gone by now, it would have just burn out the armature

u might just wanna try some shims to space the start out from the flywheel. That should reduce the grinding noise

Yeah, it always happends when starting the car cold. Seems like it I drive it to the store or something, go inside for maybe 15-20 minutes, it'll start without making the noise.
To me, it sounds like the bendex (sp?) isn't disengaging fast enough once the car starts.

Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming..

depending on the price, could just try replacing the solenoid. If that doesn't do anything u could return it. as Blamm said the "starter plunger is not extending far enough to fully engage the flywheel," or its not disengaging all the way
