  08 Si - Shifting and Ticking« » Reply  Edit

Hello All, first time poster, whats up

Got an 08 Si around December, first Honda, first 6 speed.

I have two minor annoyances with the car and am wondering if maybe I'm just not use to how Honda's sound / drive.

Shifting seems to be a bit less fluid that I would expect from a brand new clutch, seems like I get resistance in all gears once I'm over 3K and some gears I cant even push into without double clutching through nuetral at high rpms. Really pisses me off because thats where all the power is, 6K-8K.

The engine makes a ticking noise when its first started, sounds similair to a sound you would expect from somone with an older car and is a quart low on oil.

It lessesns as the car warms and has been better since the nicer weather has arrived.

Its been doing all of this since its first 1K miles, only at 4K now.

Should I be concerned? The shifting in particular bugs me, I've tried babying the thing and still had an issue getting into third gear. I went as far as even adjusting my seat to ensure I'm going all the way in with the clutch on each shift and not getting the gas invovled at all until I get the gear set.

Any feedback is good feedback, even if its to say 'HI!'

Thanks

-Ron

Hey man! Welcome to H-T.

As far as the shifting goes, the Honda/Acura 6 speeds have a reoccuring problem, and it is pretty similar to what you describe. Third gear has been trouble for a lot of people with 06-07 (and some '08) Si's.

Here is a link to a TSB that Honda released detailing repairs to be made to our cars. http://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2275287

There is a VIN range, and I think you might fall out of it. I say this because I got my '08 Si in November (before you) and mine is a little out of the vin range. But, I ordered my car the way I wanted it and had to wait two months. If yours was just sitting in a dealership, it could be 'older' than mine.

The third gear problem was supposed to be fixed before the cars that fall out of the TSB vin range, but mine still occasionally grinds third.

Hello Ron

Changed your oil yet or still on the break in oil from Honda?

The injectors are pretty loud and can sound like valvetrain ticking since they're so close to the head. The fact that your ticking comes and goes based on temp kinda sounds like it might be something else.

Check out this stickied thread at the top of the 06+ forum:3rd gear thread and see if what they describe sounds like the issue your having with shifting.+

hmm...i thought the clicking was because the k-series motors uses timing chain therefore it's louder than the b's which used belt.

Thanks for the responses, I'm going to read through the posted links and see if I cant get to the bottom of this mystery. Glad to hear that I'm not crazy or pariniod, there may be valid issues here

I've changed the oil once, but wasnt in the first 500 miles like I'm told I should have, I waited till around 3K. I've heard there is the risk of metal bits clearing into your oil during the break in, but figured if that was more than hearsay it would have been in the book. and disregarded the warning, now I'm thinking maybe I should have listened.

Thanks for the warm welcome, look forward to talking to you gents a bunch in the future.

It's just hearsay. The break-in oil isn't meant to be changed until 5k miles, but you did fine.
