Just curious to hear some stories, and hopefully learn a little bit.

I'd start, but I haven't dropped my Ninjette yet. I've only put on ~100 miles.

Sure I'll start this out...

My very first NEW bike, a Z1-R, was bought on a bright summers day many moons ago in the year 1980... fresh off the showroom floor for 3500$ OTD. On that clear Saturday morning I sidled over to Buena Park Kawasaki and picked her up... she was a sight to behold. Black on Black, DOHC, 11 sec quarters, fresh new bias ply tires... the first place I went was a school friend of mines home, in a cul de sac with an inclined drive way. As I pulled in, parking heads up mind you, he had no idea who it was... I slid off the beast and revealed myself from under my black on black helmet, all 135 lbs of me at that time. Now mind you, this was state of the art back then... 19" front wheel, 1000+cc's, 550 lbs of back bone framed dry weight, 10-15 lbs of upper triple clamp weight do to a thick fiberglass fairing and instruments... all conspired against me when I tried to leave resulting in a 2.5 hours new bike being dropped in a friends drive way that early day. I tried to make an inclined U turn in a confined space with a 550 pound motorcycle that had a 19" front wheel... Priceless

haven't dropped my streetbike but my dirtbike has plenty of battle scars, the best is when we were out trail riding in a local national forest and we had to cross a big ass creek that had 2 2x10 as a bridge.well we approach it and at first it goes up hill then you hit the bridge and cross over, well everybody has passed and i start to go up when my front tire hits the board and slips right off and starts to fall in the creek i bail off and grabbed the rear tire as the rest of the bike falls into the water...lets just say it was a bitch to pull a 250cc dirtbike out of a creek by the rear tire wile everybody is on the floor laughing at me....

I just bought the bike and within less than 5 minutes I pulled the truck out onto the road, kaboom. Broke my heart just like that. Guy I bought it from had NO clue how to strap down a bike. Luckily I wasn't on it when it had its mandatory drop.

When I was first learning how to ride, on an F4i (squid), in a parking lot i was practicing my starts and stops when a car suddenly entered the parking lot and i came to a stop. I did so however on a sever incline running from my right to my left. I had my right foot down on the high side. When the car left i went to start again and stalled it, lost my balance and went to put my foot down on the low side and put it down too close. Bike fell over and i hopped off. Then I didn't think i was going to be able to pick it up by myself, but the adrenaline rush helped me out with that and I picked it up and was good to go. No scratches on the bike even without frame sliders.

Mine happened on the 2nd day of owning the bike. The first offical day of riding it. I went to State Farm Insurance with my GF following me in the car since I needed to add both to the policy. Parking was out in the boonies but I managed to find a parking spot. I went in and wanted my GF to block my bike with her car (aka parked them both into a "T" shape) , but when I put my foot down, I put it down in a nice puddle of oil and dropped the bike. Minor damage done like scraped lever, mirror, and OEM exhaust, but that was about it. Everyone saw and I looked like an unexperienced dumbass that I was.

January of 06.

My kawi 650r couldn't have been more than a week old. i was waiting at a light. i must have been day dreaming or something. the bike just started tipping over, by the time i reacted i didn't have enough leverage to hold it and bring it back up. i just gently brought it down till i could grab it properly and bring it back up.

i felt so stupid. but nothing happened to the bike. just hurt my pride a little lol

Hasn't happened yet, but almost

I was practicing 2 weekends ago, I have a nice empty industrial park with wide streets to work on my riding

Well, instead of using the wide streets to make an easy U, I went into a TINY parking lot, like seriously a 2 spot lot. Leaned the bike over to the left immediately without slowing to a crawl, was about to hit a curb so I grabbed the front brake (with the bars turned eek), bars went to full lock with the quickness and the bike started to fall from under me. I quickly put both feet down and started heaving upward, and with my hulk like strength was able to save it right before it hit the pavement, then with my second wind I got it upright

17 years old...mid 1990s... Family vacation in Minnesota. First riding experience.... late 70's honda cb400 custom (full touring fairing). 1st day rode around neighborhood a bit and then out of the neighborhood and nearly dumped it on gravel, blew a turn and had to run off the road around a culvert and up a hill to complete a turn. left the bike in 3rd as i had no idea what i was doing and it was bucking and coughing as i wrestled it back onto the road. nobody saw it but if they did they would have taken the keys immediately.

2nd day, rode across state lines to buy fireworks with my relatives on their bikes. Good 40 mile trip. Thinking hey, I have driven cross country. I got this all figured out.

3rd day, let's ride to the motorcycle shop in Bloomington. Ok no sweat. Gear: harley helmet, shorts, tshirt, shoes. Take off with my relatives again. Take the scenic route around otter lake. First sweeper..downhill entry. I planned on taking the racing line, start wide, hit apex, and then drift out...except...I accelerated a lot on the downhill, and the outer part of the lane was covered in gravel (left over from winter for traction in the snow) so I was going 50mph in a 35mph corner on an old bike with blown forks and what felt like no shock, and I had not even heard of countersteering yet. So coming in too hot, on gravel, I grab some front brake and the handlebars just go loose, I'm outta control, drift to the side of the road and the tires grab dirt, bike immediately stops, and I slide forward, my left leg somehow wrapping around the exhaust pipe, burning the back of my leg from my ankle to my knee. Then I go over the handlebars, bending them as the front brake reservoir digs into my thigh damaging a nerve, leaving me with a numb spot to this day. I cartwheel over the bike and land on my head and shoulder. My shoulder pops and the helmet so it has a nice ding on it. Neck is tweaked, shoulder is popped, skin is bubbling off left leg, right thigh is numb. Bike is laying there sputtering. Forks bent. Handlebars bent. Got a ride home from my bro in law.

Epilogue: my skin eventually fell off the back of my left leg. Right shoulder has limited range of motion, and will get searing pain and give out for a few weeks when playing sports. Right leg still numb from that brake reservoir. A few years later I got checked really hard in hockey and it fixed my neck!

I ride slow now. I still creep around downhill left hand sweepers.

(aug 2005) i had my cbr 600 rr for about a month and decided to take it to reno for hot august nights on a whim. my cousin and i left sacramento around 11pm making good time, (i was leading the whole way) all of a sudden he over takes me pulls to the side of the road abruptly. me thinking something's wrong, (my main focus was on him thinking flat, or who knows what.) i start to pull to the side shoulder, mind it's past midnight in the mountains dark as flock i hit gravel i tried to control it and straighten it out, before i could even think i hit the ground sliding with my bike, seemed like an eternity sliding, seeing the guard rail was near by i let go and went rolling in the dirt/gravel. dust and smoke filled the air, my cousin comes running over to see what happened. first thing i do is run to my bike, pick it up and it doesn't turn on. middle of nowhere in the mountains i panic screaming fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuukc why'd you stop? his reply " dude i just wanted to take a myspace pix next to the welcome to nevada sign" if that's not bad enough, with a camera phone.

My first drop was on my BRAND NEW 1000rr. It was about 3-5 weeks new and i was cleaning the wheels, well i had the bright idea to push it forwards from the right side of the bike, and when i went to put it back down, the kickstand hit the ground and folded up and by that time i was too far leaned over and i fell onto the bike. stupid stupid stupid

almost cried.

Yeah I'll play. Bike was a few weeks old (to me) and was on the rear stand. A couple of friends and I were getting ready to play beer pong, so I rolled the bike forward on the stand. It was a tight garage, and I needed it to to be a little closer to the wall so the pong table had room. I grabbed the handle of the rear stand, and began gently scooting the rear stand closer to the wall. The vibration of the rubber rear stand wheels against the concrete garage floor made the swingarm sliders hop right out of the cradle of the rear stand. I felt like such a dumb ass in front of the people watching.

I am not the biggest guy, and would have never dreamed I could dead lift a bike upright, but when that adrenaline hits, I grabbed the handle bars and stood it straight up the first time I attempted. Not much damage to the bike, it kind of fell into some other stuff that really broke the force of the fall. Still felt like a dumb shit.

Closest I've come:

It's the first summer I had my bike, I had just gotten it in running condition. My two friends and I are in my garage, I'm sitting on the bike, they are to my left. I say to one of my friends, "here, take a seat on it" and for some idiotic reason I get off on the wrong side. As I put my weight on the right peg. the bike goes from leaning left on the kickstand to flipping the other direction. Between my panic and the light weight of the 250 I somehow catch it before it hits my dad's car and the garage floor. Bent the rear brake lever slightly, but I fixed that in a jiffy. Needless to say I was a bit red in the face, and not just because I lifted my bike up from such an extreme angle.

I bought a used.. ok abused bike that had been wreaked to learn on. I finally got the bike safe and running, for the most part it still needs fairings and the forks to be rebuilt. Within the first week I take it to work and as I get back from my lunch break, goto put the kick-stand down my foot slips off of the kick-stand and I fall into my co-workers car luckily there was no damage to his car. The bike has sliders and no fairings so nothing happen to it. Other then that I've dropped it getting it out of the backyard of my old apartment it didnt fall to the floor but it did fall against the fence and put a nice dent in my gas tank, and my pride. Atleast no one seen me do either haha

Well I just got a bike on 4/29. The first stinking night Im pulling into the church parking lot in the middle of the night to talk to my mom cause she is the custodian there and was doing a late night cleaning and when I went to stop I stepped in some rocks and lost my footing and with it being a RC51 its a heavy bike and I couldn't grab it. Just scratched the mirror and fairing but that was extreamly gay.

Couple days later I pulled the bike out of the garage and we have a dirt drive way. I got off the bike thought I had it in a solid area because there was some roots around there...well apparently It sunk in and when I turned around from locking the doors on the shop I seen it going and it landed right on a root sticking up. It chipped the paint on the corner, that was even gayer then the first time.

But its all good though, cause I don't really care its nothing that sticks out and really you wouldn't notice without being right up on the bike its just the fact that it happened. lol

On like my 2nd day of having my XT225, I was practicing around my parking lot, going around some pillars to learn how to counter-steer and take slow corners...I was doing fine, until I got a little confident and started to do it faster...after going around a pillar, there was oil on the ground, the back end slid a little...I could recover it fairly easy because I wasn't going too fast...but then I see that I'm heading straight head on to another pillar...then I panic and grabbed too much front brake.

The bike stopped right there because it wasn't going too fast. It stopped faster than I could put my right foot down...and then it started to fall to my right, when I could react it was already too late...

Only a couple minor scrapes on the bike, and gadly nothing happened to me. Just my ego that got a reality check.

Few years ago I was riding around campus on my 96 GS500 writing down phone numbers of apartment building real estate agents.

I would ride to a nice building, stop, find the sign that was on the building w/ contact info and move along. Well one stop I made I forgot to shift into neutral lol and it stalled. Resulting in me falling very slowly over onto my left side trying to catch it the entire way down. Laid it down just barely and scuffed the crank case.
