Just bought an 04 coupe, looking for some advice« » Reply  Edit

Hey everyone. My brother just bought an 04 civic coupe (LX I believe) and he wants to mod it up. He knows shit about cars though. Myself, I used to be a muscle car guy, now I have a well modded turbo 240sx. So I know shit about hondas. That's why I'm registering here. I already read the FAQ BTW..

Basically my brother wants to mod it a little, but he cant void the warranty (got it from a dealership with a 1 year/?? km warranty). He wants to change the looks a bit, like maybe some eyebrows, tail lights, maybe a bumper and skirts.. You know, make it his own but hopefully not rice it out. He also wants to make it a little more fun to drive. And I really don't have time to sit and research a bunch, so I figured I'd just come right out and ask, in hopes someone on here might be able to lend some insight.

So here goes, what are you guys doing to these cars these days? And what kind of mods will yield a good return on investment as far as handling and such?

Suspension wise: Koni/GC's are good as with any other type of car

Power-K swap or turbo (i prefer turbo myself.. T3 super 60 ftw... )

My buddy has a superchargered s2k, and that its rear wheel drive and it loses about 40% of its power from the drivetrain, axle, and other things.

alright im no guru or expert here but if he wants to add some fun or " performance" just add a Cold air intake and a hks Axel back exhaust is nice. Other than than perfomance mods such as headers ext arnt worth it cause it really isnt worth a few hundred to add 1-2 hp ( our cars dont respond well to bold on's ) if hes serious about adding some performance the only way to go is a k series swap or boost it. as far as looks, most people would add lip kits, DIY black out headlights, throw some rims and get a good suspension set up.... all depends on how much hes willing to spend.

Right, I read that about the engines.. too bad about that. But like I said, he can't do anything that will void the warranty for a while, so I don't even think an intake will work.. But what suspension pieces should we look for? I know on 240s shocks/springs (or outright coilovers) are a good mod, but then you need adjustable rear upper control arms for camber, etc..

all you need is a rear camber kit depending on the drop and wheel size. right now im running on 16's running 225/45/16. Fitting those type of tires require a fender roll though.

Like i said earlier, koni shock inserts with Ground control coilover sleeves are a great mod

Yikes, nissan guys have had nothing but problems with sleeves. Of course, we also have to modify the spring perches for them to work, so maybe that's why.

Ok, thanks for the info. I'll look into that and a decent exhaust to start with.

He bought an economical Daily Drive, save the gas money and go buy a fast car or motorcycle whatever he is into if he does not want to void the warranty on his car.

Well the warranty is apparently up at the end of the summer. Go figure. I told him he should swap it if he's serious about making it faster. In the meantime he needs to get to know the car and its limits. That's why I was asking about suspension stuff and what's good to upgrade.

Anyone know a good repository for DIY articles and the like? For instance the stuff on g2ic.com, or my favorite 240sx page (that I have some articles of my own in), here http://www.240sxtech.com/

The FAQ's here, or on civicforums.com would be the better places to start. I am currently working on the FAQ's here, but it's slow going.

Ah, excellent. That'll keep me busy for a while, thanks. I'll pass it all on to my brother too, and make him read til his eyes bleed.

Thanks for the help guys, it's appreciated.
