The Nissan GT-R's 7:29 lap record won't stand for long if Chevrolet has anything to say about it. Speaking with InsideLine, Corvette Chief Engineer, Tadge Jeuchter, says that the ZR1, "will be able to take the production-car track record at any racetrack," and that although Chevy doesn't have a production version of the uber-Vette at the Nurburgring yet, they're expecting a lap time of "seven minutes, twenty-something seconds." That sounds like smack-talk to us. But while the ZR1 might have the potential to best the GT-R's 'Ring time, the 550-600 hp elephant in the room is the forthcoming GT-R V-Spec, which is already putting down (roughly-timed) laps around the North Loop in the 7:25 realm. Let the battle begin. We're making popcorn now.

Let the fanboy wars begin.

Nissan should bore and stroke a Titan engine to 6.2 liters with a blower and put a plastic window on the hood.

California Residents: if anyone is looking to get a quote from Farmers, let me know. i personally know a farmers agent that will do all she can to lower your rates. my insurance with state farm was 4200 a year with a clean record for a 2006 rsx type-s and a 15/30/15 liability. Now it is 2200 a year with 100/300/100 liability with everything else at the same coverage and i also have life insurance, which is covered under the 2200.

edit: it's now 1600 a year.

How does a 150hp increase only drop the GT-R's time on a 7+ minute track by 4 seconds?

uh.. because power does not necessarily equal EPIC speed gains on a very technical track. You're going to have to work the turning element too if you want that much better gains.

150hp is 150hp, even if it's an auto-x course. Four seconds on a 7++ minute track could be caused by someone sneezing mid-track.

For the same reason Labarum's Miata could probably beat my Z28 on that track. Its more about handling.

Sometimes more powa = slower times. In motorcycle racing, MotoGP went from 1000cc to 800cc and are setting better times on certain tracks. Higher straight line speeds require more braking which in effect can cause disturbance. A fine balance of both with good corner speeds will result in the best times.

Not really. You don't just add 150hp to a car and make no other adjustments and expect huge gains. Or, at least, car companies that do real racing don't.

The article says "already" pulling those speeds which means that won't be it's final lap time.

Corvette Chief Engineer, Tadge Jeuchter, says that the ZR1, "will be able to take the production-car track record at any racetrack,"

Just because the V-Spec ran a 7:25 doesn't mean anything. They could have been performing braking tests on that run. Aero tests. Wind noise tests. Suspension tests. Differential tests. So on and so forth.

Are you really trying to say that a higher straight line speed and the longer braking time will result in a lower average speed over the same straightaway?

No, he's not talking about straightaway speed at all..

i think he is saying that even with increased power, you need all the other systems upgraded as well to compensate for the extra power.

For example, if you kept the same braking system the car wouldn't brake as well in the long run. For example, instead of applying the brakes at 150 mph into turn one, he would be applying it at 160 mph because of the increased power. The extra braking that is needed increases the rate of brake pad fade. So, even with more HP, the car will still run pretty much the same times.

This is just a hypothetical example. Please do not take me literally.

What does that mean then?

He means that you're going to have one hell of a mess on your hands if you have a car that overpowers its other systems.
