  300whp IPS k24a on 93 octane : Making the impossible possible.« » Reply  Edit

Hello everyone,

I wanted to make a thread about my motor that will be coming to life in a few weeks. After doing a few k24 for myself and other people I wanted to set a real challenge.

Making the impossible, possible. In all motor performance one of those dreams is to have a 300whp motor that can run on a daily basis on 93 octane pump gas.

In order to realize this goal, I knew that I had to pay attention to the details.

So after doing my research and having seen dozen of k24 dynos, I decided to go with the following

-IPS stroker kit 101.6mm x 89mm bore
-12.5:1 compression JE pistons IPS spec full featured
-IPS spec cunningham rods
-Castillo treated and stroker OEM crank from 2008 acura RDX
-s2000 oil pump ERL kit
-ERL sleeves superdeck
-ACL bearings
-Calico coatings applied to crank, pistons, rods
-Ported and polished head by Brad at RLZ with supertech valvetrain
-IPS Kme or IPS k10 cams (will test both)
-IPS manifold with 75mm accufab throttle body
-Header 4-1 megaphone made by Stefan at ASR performance with aluminum 3 inch exhaust

All this of course mated with a type s transmission with some short of LSD etc..

Here's some pics of various stages of the built for your guys to get an idea what was used.

Here's a pic of the 4 inch stamp by castilo (4 inches = 101.6mm)

here's a picture of the stroker kit with the KME and K10 cams along with 2 sets of pistons because when I started the project I was thinking about using 88mm pistons instead of 89mm. So I sold the 88mm pistons and moved on with the 89mm.

Here's some more pictured of the pistons

Here's some food for thought

This piston and pin used on this motor is about 80 grams lighter per cylinder than the shelf pistons that I have used in the past to make close to 300whp on race gas and 13.7:1 compression. So 320 grams off the rotating assembly is going to help.. and that is just the piston and pin with accounting the lighter and stronger rods as well.

So I mailed to ERL a k24 core dirty block and theywent to work

They used a new block that they have ready to go in exchange for my core

here's some pics of my stroker block before it was put together

Since the shortblock is finished and Brad at RLZ is finishing up the head, I am able to verify the IPS manifold fitment to make sure everything will be smooth. I still have some misc parts to order.. like head gasket, LSD, spark plugs but I am 99% there... thus I decided to make this thread.

Big thanks to Stefan for the killer header and the matching exhaust!!

http://www.advancedstreetperformance.com/ :up::up::up:

Even though in the past I have taken a project like this to a magazine, I have to admit that they always somehow find a way to misrepresent the project so I decided to share this with every honda enthusiast on internet , honda-tech and other websites.

Big thanks to Ron from IPS http://www.intrinsicperformance.com for the stroker kit and cams and all the help, friendship and advice and letting me test the manifold on my motor.

Big thanks to ERL for the top notch work, Sean and all you guys are among the best!

Big thanks to Brad for his time, advice and help

Big thanks to Stefan for the header and his commitment to the project (we might try a few headers once we see what is up with the curves and the cams)

Also big thanks to my immediate family and my k20a family as well.

Can't wait to see what this motor puts out. I really think its going to put out better than 300whp.

300whp and 93 octane, sounds like a pretty good goal. god all those pictures are sick, your using some damn good components, im surprised how low profile those pistons are with such a small skirt.
Did you reshape/mod the combustion chamber? or are k-series pretty damn good out of the box, cuz with 12.5:1 you need to burn that fuel pretty fast and thoroughly. Good luck sir.

"IPS stroker kit 101.6mm" Holly sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetz. Some one finally exploits the K24's deck height.

My buddy mark mostly and myself will be tuning the car. We do not tune other people's cars for money but we have a basic understanding on how hondata K pro works. and have done a lot of R and D ranging from 2 liters k20 all the way to the one we are talking about here.

The tuning process is fairly simple if you are familiar with basic concepts.Do every cam angle with and WITHOUT VTEC and then do a composite map.

On bseries more experience is needed for the tuner to know which cam angles to try but that requires manual change of the cam angle unlike K series where it is automatic.

Here are some graphs from an older motor

Here's HIGH CAM COMPOSITE

Here's LOW CAM COMPOSITE

OVERALL CAM COMPOSITE

VTEC Composite Crossover

So as you see, you have to pick the best cam angles for each RPM range and make a composite map for the final tune.

I applaude you whether you make a dyno number or not.

This is definitely a well thought-out and reasoned plan. You really don't see that much.

Thank you.

For those of you that want to learn something, look at the composite maps I just posted and try to reason our choice of cam angles.

By the way, here's my car that will be rocking Kseries swap #6
