Hondata k-pro or AEM ems?« » Reply  Edit

for a 92-95 chassis honda civic, with a k series swap.

*sorry for being a little generic, but i don't think my set-up matters in terms of which system to buy, if it is i apologize*

Hondata:

Pros:
-allows tuning/ management of engine
-wide user base
-utilizes stock ecu, for plug and play operation (somewhat rsx ecu need be obtained)
-some-what user freindly k-manager programn included
-wide-array of tuners experiencied with this system, due to wide base of "kids" using it.

cons:
-political reasons
-not all tuners want to tune with it.
-VERY expensive w/ rsx-s ecu and hondata costs may exceed or meet that of cheaper standalones
-oldest componets in ecu are 5 years old, newest componets are new with included hondata unit but used components are utilized possibly comprimising reliablty
-low-re sale value

AEM EMS:
pros:
-plug and play
-true standalone, not a daughter board system like hondata
-All new components
-somewhat harder to use programn
-upgrades compatible with most older units, allowing you to buy used
-price! costs only 300 more than hondata's unit!

cons:
-not every tuner can tune a standalone
-might be a little much
-excessive features. anti-lag, no-lift shift, nitrous controls, will most likely not be utilized, launch controls
-------------------------------

i live in socal so i am sure there are AEM ems tuners out here, if not then i'll figure something out.

pretty much what i had in mind, stupid? probably, im not very mechanically inclined/knowledgable about honda's

(don't ask how i got caught up in a k swap im doing it myself haha)

For a K-Swap? K-Pro, without question...

It will take many more tuning hours on the AEM before it is where the K-Pro can be in a couple hours.

Unless you specifically need an option that the AEM has, and the K-Pro does not...get a K-Pro.

well the major turn off for me are the used parts used in the system, idk how long it will last, electornic components tend not to last over 5 years,

and when the components in the oldest rsx ecu are already 5 years old

on a 2002 rsx the components were most likley made in 2001/ surplus of the chipset manufacterurs in 2001?

i KNOW they made the chipset for the 2002 wrx so ya.

also resale value, smog legality has nothing to do with the things i am looking for.

i plan on driving the car for a little while, not as a daily, then selling it to pay for my schooling. so re-sale is MAJOR

well people are still using obd1 ecus a lot older than a rsx ecu so I wouldn't worry about the electronic components of it

If you are really concerned about component life, buy a brand new ecu.

I say K-Pro as well.

The AEM has one fuel and one ignition table.
KPro has 12 ignition tables and 12 fuel tables. There is an ignition and a fuel table for every 10 degrees of cam angle, and the tables are broken down between the high and low cam. For that reason alone the KPro is a much better solution for the K. Not to mention that you can pass a smog inspection with a KPro.

K-pro without a doubt!!

Also the wear out part your probably thinking I believe was a resistor that went out every so often and can be replace when the lil blue box goes in. Talk to your Hondata dealer to verify though

Poor ol AEM,

If it is a street car and you dont plan on using any of the features that AEM has, then yes Kpro is your best bet.

BUT, AEM has awesome inputs and outputs that hondata just can not add because of the limitations of the stock ECU. Not to mention AEM has communications with all the popular digital logging displays like PCS, AiM, ADL etc...

Though AEM has poor control over the VTC gear. It does not do the cam advancements as smoothly as Kpro. (those that have tuned any of the 1070 or 1030 boxes may know what I am speaking of)

I really like AEM, and I really like Kpro, just for different things.
