Clicking noise coming from right rear drivetrain or wheel...« » Reply  Edit

There has been an annoying clicking noise coming from the right rear wheel for some time now and I cannot place where it is coming from. The only time I can hear this noise is when I initially accelerate from a dead stop, either going in first gear or reverse, all the same, it will make distinct clicking noises a couple times then thats it. I checked the rear axles and they look in great condition, but maybe it's just something I am missing, or maybe my differential, which I hope is not the case. I just changed the differential fluid with almasol LE just a month ago, and it still continues to make the noise. It will also make the noise when I make a right turn, I just hope maybe some one has run into this problem that might be able to tell from past experiences to help me out with advise. Thanks to all who can assist.

Either a wheel bearing/hub or your axle nuts need to be retorqued.

Axle nuts. I thought the ap2 had the newer torque specs. I know my previous 2002 had the same noise and the dealer just retorqued the nuts to a higher spec.

right when I start to accelerate from a dead stop, I hear "click click" pretty distinctive, then if I let off the accelerator then it will click again, also if I take a turn. It is getting louder too.

Was the clicking pretty distinctive? I hope it's something that easy, I am hoping its not going to cost me an arm and a leg.

I could very well be, its hard to say since I can barely remember my name

but, if you drive really close to a wall in an alley or business area where sound reflects off the wall, you can pin point where its coming from, which led me to believe its coming from the right rear, and trust me, it just gets louder and wondering if something is going to give.

I got a new axle nut, and torqed it to spec, but it was still clicking.

I had to over -torq mine to get it to stop, that was 2 years ago and still no problems from over-torqing it.

sounds like alot of people have had the same problem, I will torque this down today and hopefully it stops, I have done searches for s2000 torque specs and haven't found any.

Someone should start a info thread for AP1 and AP2 torque specs, would be very useful.

Yes I did, I did over torque it, but still making the same noise, maybe I should try replacing the axle nut too I guess. Someone also told me it might be the bearing. I will try replacing the nut first and see what happens, just not sure if it would make a difference between nuts.

My car was clicking and I thought it might be the axle nuts, but it turned out to be 2 loose bolts on the driveshaft.

That seems a little scary, I might have some time today to put my car up on jacks to check out the under carraige a little more and that sounds like something I should check out as well.

Ok guys, I lifted the car today on jacks and started the car in free motion spinning the wheels. What I have come to find out, which I have to make sure, is that the noise is coming from the output shaft from the transmission to the propeller shaft. I believe there is a bearing there that could be causing this noise when ever it shifts from stop to go. The only time it makes the click or cluncking noise is when you initially accelerate. It sounds off in both reverse and forward motion. I just hope this isn't a costly repair, this sucks!!! Who is familiar with the s2000 transmission mating with the drive shaft and what sits between the two. I cant be too sure if its also coming from the 3 plates that sit between the transmission and the shaft either. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. Thanks.

That was more of an AP1 problem where the rear axle nut needed to be re-torqued to i believe 215 ft lbs. AP2's should've had the new re-torqued specs to the axle nut.

Does it make slight clicking noises when coming to a stop, or clicks ever so lightly moving from a dead stop? If this is the case, this may be a very bad situation which I have dealt with. Premature diff failure. Ring and pinion might've cracked on you which may cause shards of metal to bounce around causing dmg to the diff carrier.

Freeway gear drops, hard launching? That is a cause for this to happen since the rear ends on AP's in general are weak as fuk.

However, I hope that I am wrong though and I am indeed readying your self for the worse. If it is your ring and pinion, at least you can now step to a better final drive/gearing

I would love to build the rear end, I have been waiting to do so for awhile now, but the noise isn't coming from the differential, I have located it to the mating between the transmission and the driveshaft, which I believe there might be a bearing there that could be the whole cause of this dilema. I am taking it to my buddies shop in Irvine, Ca at PlanB Motorsports on monday and we are going to take a look together and hopefully fix it on the spot. I wish it was something as easy as a axle nut, but unfortunately it's not.

I need an easy button..........
