I have set a side some funds to start a small business in my community, But i have hit a Rut. I get so caught up in thinking about what kind of Business to start and what it would take to run it a month and how much i would make a month.

I have thought about a

-Small drive thru coffee shop
-Landscaping business
-speedy delivery service
-online sale's then Drop ship to the customer
-small car dealership, Thanks to Craigslist.
-sign and sticker,silk screen shop
-flopping condo's and Hud home's

Those are about what i have came up with in the past month. I don't want to start something and get in over my head, I want to start a Business that's almost a "Turn-Key" operation. Not looking to get rich either, Just live a Comfortable life being my own boss and working with the public

Feel free to write anything you want

I wish i was as "Cool" as you think you are.

I vote of Landscaping business.

Why?

- You can get into the game with low overhead.
- While you are small, you can do the work yourself.
- You have the ability to hire low rate workers (illegals - sorry)
- Hard to believe, many landscapers shaft their customers. Not showing up, crap results. It's hard to find good ones.
- Most customers are loyal. They will stick with the same person for years if you are good. It's not like shopping for a car.
- Lots of green in Oregon.

I'd just go out and see whats going on with your local area before getting into this. Being a driver for UPS I see a LOT of landscape busnesses and its pretty heavily saturated here with high competition. I recall hearing around $50 per mow when I started, its around $35 now because of the influx of people interested in this career for the reasons mentioned before. Just do your research before hand.

Very true. When we lived in CA, we got tons of junk mail and knocks on the door from people wanting to do yard work. No thanks. Go away.

For my parents new house in AZ (new construction) we need someone to do landscaping. Not even one junk mail. In fact, I'm calling someone now for a quote and he does not (has not) return my call. I'm about to try the next guy. No one seem to want the business.

Yes, depending on location.

Have you considered construction clean up at say a home build or small buisness remodeling. A friend of mine built a house and was bitching about how much the clean up cost was going to be ( as it was incorperated into the builing costs). So he told the builders " ill clean up the loose woods, bricks, etc etc and employ my kids to help, well he did this and it saved him over 7K in costs.

I think if you had something like this maybe potential homeowners could benifit from this. At least out here in Cali!!

All your ideas are very sensitive to the standard business cycle. Find an un-filled small niche and exploit the f- out of it.

I've thought about starting a business, but I didn't have the determination to follow through. A few ideas I came up with..

-Urban clothing store - go out into the community, snap a few shots of stuff, go home and photoshop your pics, get 'em silk screened and market market market.

-subway sandwich business - lots of work and overhead, but those damn sandwiches practically sell themselves. Thanks Jared!

-eBay business - look for wholesalers around your area and setup accounts. take pictures of your stuff then cut and paste your way to profits on eBay. lots of work, packing, writing emails and lots of trips to the post office/UPS/FedEx/DHL. sell stuff like women's shoes, pet clothing and sex toys. euro lighting was soo 1999.

-start a website like honda-tech, call it drifting-tech, or jdm-drifterZzz-R-mad-tiGht-tech and cash in google adsense.

-start a porn site, eg. bangbros, realitykings, milfhunter.

-oh, also, theres this nice Nigerian gentleman that told me the King of Ethopia left $15,000,000 in cash buried in the desert. You just have to mail him $1,000 so he can buy a shovel to get the money. But once he gets the money, he'll give you have. Let me know if you in on the piece of the action.

I'd hold off on landscaping. My family has been doing it for about 35 years, and I can tell you we have seen a slow down in business due to the housing market, and generally a slower economy. However, if you are in an area that is demanding this type of work..

-On top of that, you probably have most of the equipment, ie. mower and edger. No need to buy something else.
-You already do this stuff at home (I'm assuming)
-If you're good and inexpensive, you should get some great "word of mouth" advertisement
-Offer neighborhood discounts. More houses on a street that use you, the bigger discount they all get. That way if you have a street that you have 5 houses to do, there's no travel time and little milage use of gas.

Count me in the business plan Jason

But I was talking to Jeff about how he was wanting to open his own Dutch Bro stand and he was talking prices and such.. Didn't seem like that bad of a setup.. Just have to find the right location first.. which is getting harder to come by around here.

Dutch Bro's does not have anymore Permits for Franchising in Oregon,The one going in off coburg is the last one in eug/spfd area. Look what happened to the one Out on 126 in Veneta, Started building with out the Permit, Now it just been sitting for 2 months un finished..lol

I don't know Jeff, So i am not sure where he is getting his Info, I called down to Southern Oregon where the offices are and Asked around, Liquid cost are way to much, But you are paying for the name and " Life style" of Dutch bros's.

I actually almost bought the stand on 6th n Blair, But they raised the price a week after i met with the broker.. WTF...

Who knows, I am still thinking of Idea's.

Manual, do it yourself, or automatic?

I have checked this out. Expensive to get in and water costs are silly.

Car washes get INSANE business up here in MN though. Gotta get the winter salt and sand off your car regularly, to keep it from rusting.

What about the Mobile car wash. Down here in so cal, they have these guys all over the place. At my work, the guy just started coming over here on Fridays, and does everything from a standard outter wash to a full blown detail job. A standard wash and vacuum is like $25, and he does almost 10 cars every friday. I'm sure a full detail with wax might run $50 or more. Plus overhead is relatively minimal. No rent on a physical space. Just a truck, or a van, and most office buildings tend to have open parking to work in.

BangBros worldwide FTW!

He (Sanchez) has taken his small outfit and turned it into a global player

I would be interested in seeing someone breakdown the actual mechanics of their business to give realistic targets for those interested in starting their own

I am slowly saving to start a small photo related business...tough with the current economy but I figured its very personalized and service can make a huge difference which = loyalty and repeat business

OP good luck

automatic, everything. Very few employees. touch screen computers to select the type of wash you want. 1 touchless bay, and 2 bays where the car is stationary and all of these mops circle the car

a few interior vacuums as well

the place was built 5 years ago, and never actually opened

care to shoot some figures at me? like some of the costs involved I might not be thinking about?

I think it's because 9 out of 10 people cannot run a business. you can buy a successful business, but if you don't know how to run it, it will fail as well
