  Maintenance Req'd?« » Reply  Edit

Hello all!

I purchased a 2004 Honda Accord LX in Sept of 07, its the first Honda in my family (we've always had Nissans). I got it at 37k mi and it is now at 49k.

When I first got the car, I noticed the Maint Req light would flash a little longer than all the other lights when first starting the car, but that stopped after my first oil change.

Did not have a problem since then, up until about a month ago, even after my oil change, the light flashed a bit longer.

Yesterday, on my way home from work, the Maint Req'd light came on and it hasnt went away. I am due for an oil change this weekend.

Is this normal for a Honda at 49k? Is this just a reminder for an oil change or is it a 50k service reminder, or am I looking at bigger problems???

I've never had a Honda before so I'm not sure how to handle this. With the Nissan's when the Service light comes on, it usually is closer to 100k miles. And when the oil level was low, then the oil lamp light came on...

P.S. Sorry if I didnt make much sense, my sinus headache is killin me!

OK, I would be the first to tell you to read the owner's manual, but looks like you've already been dissed enough.

The Maint Rq'd light is triggered by miles driven. It's a simple dumb reminder for oil change intervals, typically set to go on 10k miles after it was last reset. On my '03 Acura, you press and hold the trip odometer reset button and turn the ignition key to the "run" position until it goes out. I don't know if this applies to your model, though.

What American car do you suggest for comparison to the Accord?

Dont even think of the Chevy Cobalt or Malibu. THEY SUCK!

Malibu, friend owns one, and they transmission went out around 50k

Cobalt, Uncle owns one, I had one as a rental car, It feels like your towing something!

It's just a maintenance "reminder". It will flash when you turn the key on at about 7,500 miles. At 10,000 miles it will stay on, trying to convince you to do the maintenance. To reset the light, hold the trip reset button down (with your left hand), and turn the key to on (no need to start), hold the button down until the light goes out. Then you are good for another 7,500 miles. This information is in the owner's manual under "maintenance required light".

They don't suck-you get what you pay for. Be realistic, those cars aren't in the Accord class anyway-they are smaller and much cheaper. (Except for the New Malibu, which is nice, but too expensive with any options added).
