Obviously, either solution is a compromise as we're mating two components that there is no off-the-shelf gasket from Honda to accomodate.

It looks like the vast majority of the oil drain holes are blocked by using the VTEC gasket/non-VTEC block combo whereas only one coolant hole (of many) is almost completely blocked and second is maybe 5% blocked when using the non-VTEC gasket/VTEC head combo. How was it decided that the first combination (i.e. using a VTEC gasket) was the "better" tradeoff? I'm not trying to start a pissing match, just genuinely curious as I'm going to put a B20VTEC together in the comings months.

Also, I'd imagine those rivets could be removed pretty easily. Would that affect the gasket's sealing effectiveness in any way?

then the next post asks "why did you use the Vtec gasket".. LOL!!! i guess posting a description with pictures still doesn't make it any better nor more understandable for some people........ i think if people are genuinely so worried about it they shouldn't be attempting an Ls/b20 - vtec.... stick with your b16s!!

both gaskets in the pics block off oil return holes because your mounting a head that was not made to fit the block. but think about it this way the head does not have the oil return that is being blocked by the gasket so really your not blocking anything with the vtec gasket that the head has ware when using the ls gasket you are blocking coolant ports that the head has and needs and you have rivits in the way to deal with. so why use the ls gasket there is no advantage to it and again not saying you cant but why

The picture is informative, but it hardly answers every question. There are tradeoffs with both solutions -- asking how they determined which was the better tradeoff isn't a stupid question.

Perhaps I should have made this reply a picture so you'd understand.

if you look at the pic with the ls gasket on the vtec head you will see both gaskets block the oil return holes and there is nothing you can do about that

I think some one asked before but how would the effectiveness of the seal be is someone were to remove the rivets or enlarge some of the oil return holes to fit better?

you don't need to with ether gasket the holes are partially blocked but the oil will return with no problems and with vtec gasket you do not have to remove the rivets there not in the way.

so i thought when doing mixed swaps like b16 head on ls block, etc etc, a general rule of thumb was to use the gasket FOR THE BLOCK.

EX: LS block, b16 vtec head. - you would use a LS headgasket.

now from this thread, my interpretation was to use the gasket FOR THE HEAD.....

am i right in my line of thought? that was my interpretation and vibe that i got from this thread....or am i totally going off on the wrong track?

well it looks like the LS gasket on the GSR head, just a slight part of the rivet is on the suface of the head, even if it's not touching on the block, wouldn't that creat an uneven suface and leak oil?

yes that is one of the reasons we don't use the ls gasket. we only use vtec gaskets in our kits it is the best gasket to use
