You wanna make shifter extension? Heres how to do it.
Tools: 14mm wrench 16mm wrench M10x 1.5 tap and die Hack saw Supplies: 1 turn buckle 1 M10x1.5 bolt The turnbuckle can be bought at your hardware store and they come in various sizes, buy which ever one is fitting to your application. ![]() Unscrew the eye bolts from the turn buckle and your going to end up with this: ![]() Take your M10x1.5 tap and 16mm wrench and re-tap the threads of the turnbuckle on both sides. ![]() Cut the head of your bolt and your going to end up with a stud: ![]() Thread the stud into your shift knob: ![]() Then thread the shift knob onto the turnbuckle: ![]() Go to your car and put on the m10x1.5 nut onto the shifter and thread it all the way down: ![]() Then go ahead and thread on the turnbuckle onto the shifter, use the nut to adjust were the shift pattern on your knob face: ![]() enjoy your new shifter, shifter throw will be increased but the shifter will be positioned closer to your steering wheel.

Nice DIY, but I'd never want the shifter to be any longer than stock height.. That's why I purchased a MG short shifter w/ skunk2 knob -- to each there own.

I think best would be to get a short shifter and then a extension that way you dont have a rediculously long throw

Also, to the OP: You said the shifter throw is increased, but if you purchased an aftermarket short shifter and then added the extension on top of it; following the same directions you posted....do you think they would cancel each other out and leave you with a throw at least close to stock, if not a bit shorter? Just an idea in case you found the increase more than you'd prefer. And if you painted the extension black or with that Metalcast paint, it could actually LOOK pretty nice too. Also, do you track the car as well? If so, after your first event I'd be curious to learn if in your opinion it was a sound investment, or not as effective as you had hoped. |

I would just like to add;
if the short shifter is aluminum, you will snap it with an extension like that. But most decent shifters that wont be the case, unless you bought it off ebay.

I Shot 50 Cent thanks for putting that out there some people just don't understand stuff like this. Yeah its at its first stage of making it I slapped that on there 2 minutes after I made it I'm probably going to be painting it. Its mounted to a gsr double bend shifter the throws are a little bit longer but its not like this thing is permanently mounted when I feel like getting into spirited driving I can just unscrew this and have the shifter at stock hight and throw. Another reason I did this is for more heel toe practice, I do runs threw the presidio (curvy mountain roads in sf) although they aren't long runs I still get a chance to experience that type of driving and improve my driving skill.

If people shift like they're supposed to this will not break a shifter. Slamming gears does not decrease your shift time, it only leads to binding of the linkage, excessive wear, and more missed shifts. A smooth, affirmative shift is 10x better than pulling it like the starter on your mower.

My boy had the real deal one in his ae86 I drove his car and liked the way it felt and Ive always thought the honda shifters were too low Ive always like the way the 240sx and s2k center console is pretty high and the shifter is right there but that couldn't be done because its a (FF). Walking around the local hardware store I came across the turnbuckles and thought *HEY* that would work.
