Popping out of 5th gear« » Reply  Edit

Daughter called and mentioned she has to hold the shifter in 5th gear otherwise it will pop out. The car is 3 hours away from me.
What could it be? I am not familiar with Civic manual shift system. Is this just a cable adjustment? I surely hope nothing major.
Thanks.

Could be a gear, or maybe a syncro. Probably the gear though.

I would say its a syncro problem.

It still moves in 5th gear, so it's not the gear. It still shifts it just pops out, so it's not the syncro. Thanks.

She drove (supervised) my 5 speed 1991 Accord for 1.5 years before she passed the license test on the same car.

Ouch!! $800. Hope not.
I am thinking more along the lines of shift fork or rod not going all the way in.
Maybe the slider dog teeth?

On the 5-speed Accord, there is a small housing on top of the transmission that houses the shift rod and selectors. If it's the same as the Civic, is it possible the 5th gear tab for the 5th gear broke off.
I will drive up my Accord and swap rides this weekend. Hope it's not something major.
I wonder what will be the RPM in 4th gear going 70 mph. ????

not going to help much but it worth a try, my car used to pop out of 3rd and 5th gear a while ago, i forgot to put enough transmission fluid in it... after i corrected that, i have a whine on those gears, probably from holding it so that it wouldn't popout and not much lubrication, anywho, aside from the slight whine, it hasn't popped out on me ever since...

Well, still hoping for the best.

How much did it cost you to get a new tranny if I may ask?
I have no problem installing it myself. How bout a used one?

i wouldent do that. stick with the original shit man. my only suggestion to you is have her bring it to some place to get it fixed and cut your losses. sadly the d17 tranny is not very strong it seems.

that's what he meant, a used, replacement stock transmission, sometimes you see them popup on car-part.com for cheap, like 200-400...

Yeah, I'll stick with original if I could fix it though.
I still have to drop it myself and just bring it to a transmission shop.

Is it really a weak manual tranny? I don't see a lot of owners posting 5-speed tranny problems.

i believe it's just a matter of how you drive, treat it bad, it will break, treat it good, it'll last you a long time. no, i don't think it's weak/bad/faulty.

If you could get it at dismantler you can get a good used one for like 300 bux

Wow, just 14k miles.
Hers has about 98k miles.
I just did the front suspension refresh last month and changed the tranny oil with Honda MTF.
I was gonna change the timing belt at 110k miles, but I may as well do it while it is down.
Thanks.

When I first bought my car it did this, and it turns out I was just low on transmission fluid. By far the cheapest that anyone else has suggested, so I'd certainly start there.
