Does your tranny make noise?« » Reply  Edit

I feel like over time my transmission is getting louder. Buts its hard to tell...

First I don't remember this happening before but when you let out on the clutch I hear a noise coming from the tranny. Im just wondering if other Type r owners hear tranny noise when in neutral with the clutch out.

It sounds like a bearing noise more than anything.

my trans has been making noise since as long as I can remember. its more of a whining noise than anything else, almost like a supercharger, and happens mainly in 4th and 5th gears. 4th gear especially Ive replaced almost all the bearings in the trans/flywheel and it has never gone away. it goes away when pushing the clutch in and is really only noticable at this point at low RPM in 4th and 5th. I just learn to not even worry about it anymore.

I get the same noise. I replaced the flywheel, clutch, pilot bearing, and throw out bearing about 9k miles back. I have had the car since new, and can't remember if that is the way it has always been.

I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, (pilot bearing) last year.

So the parts are fairly new? If something is wrong I would love to have it be the pilot bearing. How often do bearings go bad in the transmission? And if they start to go bad how long do I have?

I think I'm getting the same noise. Not all the time but most of the time. It started doing it around 22k miles and I'm around 34k now.

Is this something that needs attention or can I let it go unless it starts to sound worse?

I concur. There have been other threads on this topic before and they also point to the input shaft bearing. My trans has the same issue, but it's usually pretty faint still.

With 34k I would think you be okay for a while. If you still have the stock clutch, I would wait until you need to replace the clutch. If mine starts making noises under a load I will be a little more concerned.

With the clutch out it could be the ISB or TOB.

ISB is more of a whirring knock, TOB is a whine.

If its the ISB, replace ASAP or you'll be needing a new trans after it explodes.

I had this same noise in my transmission, before it blew (Not related to the noise).

The input shaft bearing, main bearing, and differential bearings, were replaced. My mechanic who rebuilt it (Same Acura Technitian as Madsurfer refered to), told me the input shaft bearing was the cause of the noise.

After it went back it, idle was quiet as could be.

So It def sounds like a bearing problem. How long do I have before something bad can happen?

I got to 135,000 without anything bad happening. I pushed the envelope.

Yup, I just recently replaced all transmission bearings, put in a new clutch, flyweel, and rear main seal. Tranny is quite as can be.

My gears looked great for having 104,000 miles on them. Didn't replace any syncros or gears because it does not grind and wear looked normal

I toasted my ISB during the last session at Expo 5. Made it 999 miles back home and a couple hundred after that until my new clutch/fw/etc came in along with the new ISB and seal.

ISB is about $25. At least for my D. Probably similar for the B.
