Default Dave Ramsey - Listen. Read. Get out of debt.

One of the best things someone did for me with regard to money was introduce me to Dave Ramsey.

http://www.daveramsey.com

He has a show every afternoon and you can find his archives online. The show is all about listeners calling in asking advice on how to get out of debt.

Thanks for chiming in.

It doesn't seem like Dave Ramsey is popular in this forum so I'm glad to see someone who reads his stuff.

I listen to him everyday in the car, then follow up with the rest of his shows at work. I believe in everything he does and says. I suggest it to most people, but when I have its like shocking that you can live debt free so I try to keep it to myself anymore. After listening to him for a few months, its showed me that this is the way I want to live my life.,.,

It's not rocket science. Live below your means and pay off your debts. Pay your bills on time. There I saved you the trouble lol

You know it's almost bad advice to tell someone to live debt free. Not all debt is bad.

If you have a mortgage that is at a relatively low rate then paying the minimum and investing the rest will yield you more money in the long run than paying off your house as fast as possible. The same goes for all low/no interest loans.

Of course if you are too weak to control yourself then you can take the easy and less profitable way of living debt free.

You are 100% correct but that’s the problem most people can’t control themselves and their situation spirals out of control because they have no discipline.

On topic: I listen to the radio show when I can and then my wife started listening to it as well. Now we are taking the class. I don’t really think we need to because we are not in debt at all and I have always lived that way. But I handle most of the finances and if she wants to learn more about the “right” way to handle money then I’m for it.

Yea people forget the house you are living in really shouldnt be looked at as an investment, we've seen the market and how volatile real estate can be, not to mention unlike more liquid investments houses are hard to sell, and you will always need one

To an extent, for the short term renting something below your means and investing your free money is better than jumping into ownership too early...

Build a wealth base and go from there. That's what I plan to do

No offense, but you come off as a close minded idiot when it comes to debt. Uncle gave you an example where HE IS PERSONALLY making 5k from CC debt.

Good debt? How about an interest free loan from a credit card company for a year, would you consider that bad debt?

I agree with you that credit card debt is definitely bad with the astronomical rates they charge, but the assumption you're making with uncle's example is that everybody that takes out any loan will default 100% of the time which will ruin their credit. You are wrong, if you are disciplined you can make money off of credit cards. There are a slew of credit cards that offer 3% and 5% back FOR PURCHASES THAT YOU WOULD NORMALLY MAKE ANYWAY. Why wouldn't you take advantage of this?

Did I even mention a tax write off? No. Take you own advice and READ.

I said that with low/no interest loans for items within your means it is often much better for your bottom line to pay the minimum and invest the rest over time in the stock market. This is specifically goof for mortgages because you will stay in the market for the long term.

I personally only buy other large ticket items when I have the cash however if I can finance @ 0% then spending that kind of cash when I will make more money by financing is purely idiotic.

The whole purpose of this thread was to introduce Dave Ramsey into the lives of others.

You think it's idiotic? This guy has been crunching numbers longer than you've been alive.

I'm only following his advice.

Listen to the show and read his book and you tell me if he is an idiot?
