Default $50 dollar paintjob attempt.

I have found it hard to know exactly everything that needs to be done for this. I have read the majority of the official thread. But i will take this time to "try" to construct a write-up for the first timer. (As i am myself) I will be learning along with this. Note: I have no auto-body experience, which pretty much is the beauty of the whole 50 dollar paint job idea. I will have two buddies helping me. One who took autobody in his vocational school.
Its friday afternoon, and i'd like to try the best i can to get this driveable by monday morning so this may be kind of rushed, although i wish it wasnt.

We'll lets start off with the beater. A 1992 vx hatch with black primer.I just picked this thing up yesterday, it is beat. The kid i bought it from lived at a trailor park and didnt seem to take too good of care of his vehicles.. But it was cheap.

The z6.

The interior..yuck. It used to be teal. I wish it would of stayed that way, otherwise i wouldnt be doing this.

The hatch and supplies.

Closer view.

The color i chose.

Gloss almond. On the official thread i saw alot of gloss white. And it got kind of boring, I havent seen this one so i chose it to be alittle original. Holding it up to the car i think it might actually look sick if i can pull it off right.

Supplies list (so far)
Home Depot:
3 quarts of Gloss almond- $7.84x 3 = $23.52
2 Spray cans of Gloss almond- $3.60x2 = 7.20
Bondo-= 11.00
2 four inch rollers = $3.82x2 = 7.64
Pack of five 4 inch high density roller pads = $5.97
1 1/2 inch blue tape = $3.89
Gallon Mineral Spirits= $10.47

Autozone
Various sandpapers= $10.00
Brush i forgot to get at home depot= $2.79

I'm going to head out and start on this. Wish me luck.

Good luck with the paint job, I finished my $50 paint job a couple weeks ago and I think it turned out okay. Just be absolutely sure you've thinned the paint enough and work out the bubbles before painting another section. I missed a few groups of bubbles during my third coat and paid for it the next day... all day sanding session.

Your beater reminds me of mine when I first picked it up. Primer paint job, various missing pieces... but it's hard to say no to a cheap car!

I dont like half *** ****. But right now im short on time so im just doing the exterior as far as i can go. I will be pulling the motor and all other various interior next weekend and painting probably with the spray cans i got.
Just got all the bondo and such applied and came back to wash the car.
Going back to work right now to apply the first coat. I'll be back in a few hours to post all the pictures.

Little bit of bodywork being done.

Rainbow car

Washed up and ready for paint.

Me about to paint.Alittle nervous here. Wasnt sure if it was exactly waterlike. But i think it was okay.

I think i layed it alittle thick on the hood. Was the first to paint, things evened out.

I think its too early to know what to think. But i have a decent feeling about it. It looks like **** because its the first coat. But things arent really supposed to shape up until the 3rd or 4th. I'll be up tomorrow to lay on coat number 2. My buddy keeps trying to convince me to let him spray the rest. But i think i just want to roll it.

Dried over night, fairly smooth to the touch, not real sticky.

Picking bugs and **** out of my paint.

Midway through coat 2.
]

Next comes some wetsanding which i hear is quite fun

I noticed the gloss coat 2 put on the car made alot of the dents i didnt fix, or even the ones i tried to fix alot more apparent. I could of put some more work into that area, but it doesnt really bother me that much right now.
It seems to be taking decent shape I think. We will see.

Alright, so i wetsanded it until it was pretty smooth. I didnt go nuts, but i put some time into it. I think it came out okay. Then i put the 3rd coat on and its really starting to put things into perspective. I had doubts before, but i am pretty sure its going to turn out nice.
Here are the results of coat 3.

There is some orange peel as you can tell. But then again i have much more wetsanding to do and then buffing at the end. There is also a nice shine/gloss to it already.

Its okay mike. I'll pick up your mirrors and color match them.
Then a little bit of clean up the next few months, turbo kit, and up for sale maybe?

I am wondering if you added any spirit mineral to it?
/ If you added anything to the paint and if you did what kind and how much

thanks!

Why take it out of the garage when you still have more painting... let alone a dirt field. Looking good though.

Yeah alot, i dont have an exact mixture but its close to the amount of paint i put in,if not more. I add it until its really thin.

The paint was fairly dry, and i wanted to kind of get things done quickly yesterday so i let it set in the sun. Plus i thought i'd get some shots in some real light since its started to get full coverage.

Heres results of coat 4. Kind of got orange peely, Im going to go wetsand in a few hours.

After letting semi dry for an hour, I let it sit in the sun.

And i just finished off my first quart of paint with the end of the 4th coat. I dont see me getting much past half of the 2nd quart. So i bought too much paint, but oh well. Good thing i didnt buy the gallon because I was going to but they didnt have almond in gallons.

Not done yet. But so far..
- I would of set away more time for bodywork
-Completely disassembled the body for full coverage (lights etc) Im doing that next week though.

Tips
-When you roll, you will have bubbles, just roll the paint on and move on, come back a few minutes later and go over the bubbles again most of them will be out. Come back once more to check for any bubbles and or runs.

- Runs in your paint arent a big deal at all, as long as the paint is still wet you can easily roll back over it and take it out.

-For some reasons in the beggining, some spots do not want to cover as well as others. Dont worry about this, it will cover up in further coats. The paint just wont cover. Do not add more paint to that area, it just makes it worse.
