Default My EF Hatch's Honda-Tech Debut. . . . . . timeline too? Build? I dunno.

Immediate disclaimer I am not a photographer, pin pointers always taken.

I am a Volkswagen guy. I am also open to learning and building a Honda. This car fell into my lap 40K miles after a full engine rebuild. Unfortunately, it was this motor.

I put a new low mileage transmission in, it that was known to be good. New clutch, new axles, new front brakes. Since I manage & service write at the shop, I was able to get the car right from the customer, get all my OEM parts at direct cost, and get a hand doing the work. It's been a great rig, getting my *** around town at 35 MPGish and 42 MPG on the hwy (Vegas and Back, $220, round trip between 3 people? Sorry about the backseat Michelle - Non-AC in 118 degree heat. Cooler with the windows up.) It does have OE suspension. The best driving OEM suspension after 190K miles on chassis. Rear rebound fine, fronts are a very little sloppy. But there is my marvelous ride height.

Gar. Some day soon. I did figure out my wheel situation this weekend though, HX wheels. Not so good tires, just put them on for picture purposes until I get some tires and suspension.

Before -

(Thanks lil brother)

After -

(UW campus in Seattle - Blah)

The money for the wheels and body changes were brought to you by this lil joy in early march.

(Lady turned left in front of me when I had the green, nailed her RR and spun her into traffic. Whined to cop that I was speeding, cop told her she was wrong. $1822 check. Bazzzing.)

Now I can do some cool stuff.

All parts OEM NIB Honda - Once again, the hook up deal for the service writer. Called my wholesale parts guys at Lynnwood Honda and got Fender, Hood, and bumper. Ebay cheapos got me my bumper lights ( ) and corner lights (Jury's out - Maybe try OEM). That was all around $500. Hood shaved, all sprayed, installed and blended. That was around $450. Spent the rest on wheels, hood struts, nology wires, and Ebay intake w/K&N cone. The last 2 in hopes of better fuel economy, jury's out again. Then spent the rest to go on a vacation down south. This rain sucks still after 17 years.

Slow - Yes. Economical - Yes. Swap in the future - Yes. Still researching.

Other "Mods" - B&M Short shifter, Ansa Sport rear muffler (Quiet& Free), Ebay Rear Stress bar
(Free, thanks Bejbis),

(Contemplated Porsche Cheyenne tip - Free, thanks Kevin)

Remove the red middle blend - installed black (Free, thanks Ed)

, 5mm spacers all around (Free, thanks Pete & Jose), good MP3 Cd alpine deck ($150ish), little amp and rear speakers installed on side parcel shelf plastics w/ amp fuse hidden by me too look factory (Free, thanks Blake & BJ), runs on all synthetic Amsoil without losing a single drop every 6K (God bless amsoil), transmission runs on 1 quart Synchromesh, rest Honda MTF.

A great choice IMO.

I briefly flirted with the idea of these Flik Blasts.

They were light as all hell (11.something pounds iirc) but the red was killer ugly and i didn't wanna hassle with painting em, sold em to a Dubber with a T-red GLI 16V MKII (they look great Mozart)

I contemplated these boat Anchor centras, they look hot, but are way too heavy for my Gas Mileage goals.

They now live on a diesel rabbit.

The bro enjoying my marvelous car again.

3 More of my KILLER freebies -

Blah

Boom

Momo Wheel that matches my interior perfect (Adam aka Vegasjetta - Supplyin Honda's too, junk yard genius)

Shift **** off my old GTi (Xmas gift) and Marvelous Neuspeed floormatts (From Scotty's Red Rado).

The SLOW but efficient bay pic -

One other mod - Hella Air horns keepin gramma's out my grille. Unless they have a faster Buick.

Ebay Crap filter long gone.

One more pic I like then on to the questions . . . . .

Questions

I got my big 14 inch wheels now, they are coming off till I get rubber & factory steels with great rubber back on (Blah). What do you HX wheel folks suggest? It's got some cheap-o 185/60R14's that are really needing to be replaced. Brand and sizes with good performance at a decent price? Place purchased? It's wet around here. You gotta pay to play though.

As you can see, I have a marvelous Tach-less cluster, doin my homework, I found that my 90 Civic hatch can use a 90-91 Civic/CRX tach cluster. A trip to the pull apart yard got me a lockless passenger side door handle ($3), and some vw roccoII euro corners & mono wiper assembly. No Tach cluster. Ebay ones get toooooo high. Who wants to sell me one?!?!?! Non A/T, around 180 Miles maybe? I got stuff to trade if needed (NIB OEM Parts)

Rear disc beam - which ones are the most easily swapped & headache free?

Finally - My suspension save up. Wanna do it right. Not feelin coils, just springs and shocks. I was thinking H&R Sport springs w/ KYB AGX Shocks but I think I am going to save up for Tokico's, same springs and a good rear sway. Do it right, do it once. With some great tires (See above), it'll handle like a sweedish gymnast. (Hellllo IRS, see ya beam)

Then some day that motor swap. Motor blows (100K) or gas prices go down (HAHAHHAHA)

Thanks - Ermil

First off, I love (the few) dub heads that give Hondas a chance or accept them.

Secondly, I would invest in some 13" VX wheels if you want. HX's are highly sought after and you could probably make a $100-$150 profit selling the HX's and buying VX wheels. The VX wheels came on 92-95 Civic VX (the gas friendly car). They are 9lbs each, 13" and made by Enkei. Aside from that it looks like you've completed your goal of a gas friendly daily driver. As far as suspension check this out; its simple and effective yet I don't know how it's doing now:

That's fricking GREAT info. Might have to try it with AGX's.

Any pics of those VX wheels? I could just search . . . .

all d-series codes are the same. the only way to check is by going to the faq section in this forum and finding the d-series tranny identification guide.

Yes, HF transmissions are great! I have one in my 4-door EF, fully rebuilt. If you do end up checking out that website Ermil, you can look at my gaslog for my Civic and see the jump in mileage when I put the transmission in.
