The "Cavallino Rampante"
Here is the history of the most famous car brand mark in the world, the small black prancing horse - “Cavallino Rampante” in Italian – the symbol of the Italian brand Ferrari. The origin of the Cavallino Rampante is often associated to a story, legend or myth, because only few people know the truth about it. Indeed, many different stories are circulated around the world. But certain elements remain constantly : it is at the time of his first victory on the 17th of June 1923 on the Savio circuit near Ravenna that Enzo met Count Enrico Baracca, who was subjugated by his talent. Then he met his wife, Countess Paulina Baracca, who offered the emblem of the Cavallino Rampante to Enzo Ferrari, telling him that if she displayed it on his racing cars, he would always meet luck. This emblem came from the fuselage of their son Francesco Baracca's fighter plane; he was leading the 91th squadron and was shot down during World War One. But one question remains : where does this emblem come from? Here are three stories, you are to choose the one that suits you...
The first story tells of a young pilot, Francesco Baracca, a World War One hero, who had painted his family's blason on his plane's fuselage. Indeed, the Baraccas from Modena have always displayed the Cavallino Rampante on their coat of arms ever since the 17th Century. Although an Ace, Francesco Baracca was shot down on the Montello during the war. On the day of his first victory at Savio, Countess Baracca would have given him a remnant of the plane displaying the blazon, to bring him good luck.
The second story has it that the Cavallino Rampante was the emblem of the 91th squadron lead by Francesco Baracca during World War One, and was used again by the 4th Aerobrigata during World War Two. Thus contradicting the first story, as the squadron's blason could not be linked to the one of the Baracca family ! But this version keeps the giving of the fragment of the plane by Francesco Baracca's parents at Savio.
The third story is the most extravagant, but might be true. Francesco Baracca would have painted this emblem on his fighter after bringing down his fifth German plane (a BII Albatros) above Tolmezzo. This plane was displaying a prancing horse similar to the coat of arms of Stuttgart in Germany. Anecdote has it that this same horse is now the brand mark of the German Porsche. But this German horse is a mare, whereas the Cavallino Rampante is a stallion ! This would imply either Ferrari's or Baracca's altering the sex of the prancing horse. But which of both ?
All three legends finish in the same way. Its is certain that the original horse's tail was pointing down. Ferrari simply needed to turn it up to make the shape more impressive, and in addition to that let the horse stand on one hind leg, very unlikely but even more impressive stance. Then, he would have chosen a yellow background to remind his native city Modena. He also added three colored stripes at the top if the blazon that represent the Italian banner (green-white-red). On the blazon can also be read the letters “S” and “F”, standing for “Scuderia Ferrari”. The emblem first appeared when Ferrari created his own team in december 1929. After that, the successful story and the paths of glory followed by Enzo Ferrari needs no telling. Items displaying the Cavallino Rampante, from cars to fans' collectibles, are simply impossible too numerous to list.
Here is Enzo Ferrari's official response to all those hypothesises, on the 28th of November 1984 :
“The story of the prancing horse is simple and attractive. The horse was painted on the fuselage of Francesco Baracca's plane when this heroic pilot fell on the Montello. When I won my first race on the Savio circuit in Ravenna in 1923, I met Count Enrico Baracca, father to the hero, and then met Countess Paolina. She told me one day "Ferrari, do display my son's prancing horse on your cars; it will bring you good luck". I'm still preciously keeping Baracca's photograph with his parents' dedication, by which they gave me the emblem. The Cavallino was black and still is; I added Modena's yellow as a background to it.”
Enzo Ferrari
This is how the famous Cavallino Rampante appeared; it is on each and every Ferrari since 1929, when the Scuderia Ferrari was founded. If it be myth or legend matters little, as long as it became the symbol of Ferrari and the best known car emblem in the world.

Latest f1 racing news:
Track: Sakhir
Drivers: Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa
Cars: F2007 and F2007Ferrari lead the way for the first day of multi-team testing at the Sakhir Circuit in Bahrain today. Felipe Massa was first for the Scuderia, followed by Kimi Raikkonen in the second F2007. This was most promising for the Italian squad as they were ahead of all major teams.
Massa set the fastest time of 1'31.778 during 86 laps of testing. Raikkonen was second fastest, just over 1 tenth down on Felipe's pace, a 1'31.901. This came after completing 47 laps. Both men worked primarily on endurance set-up and electronics testing. This session also benefitted the team as they will have a much better picture of how the car will perfom at the Grand Prix of Bahrain later this year.
Ferrari's drivers lead the way today in front of Button in the Honda, Hamilton in the McLaren, Barrichello in the other Honda and de la Rosa rounding out the top six in the second McLaren. The BMW, Toyota, Red Bull, Renault, Toro Rosso and Super Aguri cars followed, though not necessarily in that order. BMW again proved impressive and of course McLaren was on the pace. Honda certainly surprised as their previous running was less impressive. The most impressive run of the day was by Anthony Davidson in the Super Aguri as he beat both Renault cars, including new Renault driver Heikki Kovalainen.
So does this prove that Ferrari is definitely at the front of the field this year? Not necessarily, though it is certainly an improvement and very promising. Testing continues in Bahrain tomorrow.
