The cause of any computer problem can be attributed to any combination of a thousand different reasons. If you need immediate help, your best chance is if you include as much information as possible on your first post.

This would include the make and model of the computer. If it’s a home built, then the make and model of the motherboard.

Also try to be as detailed as possible when describing the problem.

Don’t just say “My computer doesn’t boot.” Let us know exactly what you see on the screen when you turn it on. For example…

“When I turn on my computer I see the bios screen, then the windows logo, then it just sticks there.”

Also list the things you recently changed on the computer. Any software, drivers, or hardware that you might have installed, or if you noticed that Windows Updates recently ran. It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to list the things you might have already tried, in trying to fix this problem.

Having this information available in your first post will make it easier for the experts, professionals and enthusiasts in this forum to diagnose and offer a resolution to your problem.

PS: Get in the habit of backing up your personal data to either a harddrive or burnable media like CD’s or DVD’s. All harddrives will eventually fail. It isn’t a matter of IF it’s a matter of WHEN.

Windows Defender
Microsofts free antispyware program. Works pretty decent, updates and scans automatically, and works in the background similar to antivirus software.

Spybot Search & Destroy
Great tool to use on infected systems. Has immunization built in to pre-block known spyware. Make sure to install all updates after install.

Spyware Blaster
This tool only "pre-blocks" known spyware. Make sure to update.

AVG Anti-Spyware Free
Haven't had to use this yet myself, but if it is as good as their free AV software, it should be a winner.

Ad-Aware SE Personal
Not a personal favorite of mine, but can detect spyware that others might not.

Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus Free (11/29/07) NOW HAS NAGWARE POPUP
One of the best free AV packages around. Perfect when your Norton or McAfee trials run out.

Avast AV
Use this FREE AV software instead.

Misc Tools

The PC Decrapifier is designed to remove a specific list unwanted software in an unattended fashion. Before running, the user may select exactly what software should be removed.
