OMG!! What happened to my timing belt? PICS!!!!
I posted a couple days ago about my engine shutting off on the road. Well...finally got a chance to look at it and the last thing i pulled off was the valve cover to discover this.
Yikes....
I dont do crappy jobs especially on my car. I JUST put the timing belt on mabye a week before this happened. The only thing i noticed was that the timing was off by mabye 1/4 of a tooth or something. It wasnt making any noises or anything that sounded like hard rubbing.
From the pictures it seems like the timing belt was rubbing on the right side on the timing belt covers? Any feedback would be appreciated.
P.S. It has an auto-tensioner.

your sure everything was aligned properly? The belt should not walk at all and it looks like damn near half the belt is worn away.
If you changed the timing belt a week ago (tensioner change) then its obviously something you overlooked while doing the job.

Mine hangs over about 1/4", but it never goes any further than that.
Seems like something is bent or misaligned that keeps pushing it out and out....not just something pushing it out a few mm and stopping. Auto tensioner?

Update: That is not a crack. I do have an extra set of cams w/ gears but it was the plastic that looked like a crack. I will let you guys know more after my holiday family dinner....sigh.

Re: OMG!! What happened to my timing belt? PICS!!!! (ShinobiLude)
Same thing happen to me funny thing is it happened like 1week after i did the first timing belt change on that motor. I was at a light and then i started to move and the car just died. So i had some tools with me took my valve cover off and all i saw was powder. Then i put the manual tensioner on and have not had a problem yet and to tell you the truth when i did the change over from auto to manual the motor just felt more solid.
My buddie on the other hand, had bad luck when his auto tensioner took a **** he was on the toll at about 6k in 4th and it droped every valve and all the pistons were fucked.

Re: (Rosko)
I have ordered all the peices from Honda and found that write-up on collective racing that gives full pictures and everything.
http://www.collectiveracing.ne...c=9.0
The link in the other post about this is broke. This one works if anyone cares.
I will let you guys know after Christmas or today what exactly the problem was. I probably hit a midget and got stuck in my crank gear knowing my luck.

Re: (ShinobiLude)
There is a special bolt that the tensioner idler pivots on; I would bet that this bolt is bent.
This problem is not caused by the auto tensioner, but switching to a manual tensioner will fix this because it won't use this bolt anymore.

Yeah, once you get that thing down 700 pixels or so your timing belt should be fine.

Yeahhhhhhhh...I would resize them but I wanted you guys to see EVEYTHING close up. I wouldnt post them that big just to do that. Do you have a 56k connection...get better internet or dont come in this thread.
Thanks Pirate for the response...I will check this bolt after Christmas when i have time to look at the motor. Manual tensioner will be a good thing to get anyway...yikes.

Re: OMG!! What happened to my timing belt? PICS!!!! (spun311)
Wow!! My 99 SH is doing the very same thing!!! The pic looks exactly like what mine looked like when I poped the valve cover off 2 months after my uncle and I done the timing belt service.
Back in October I replaced the timing belt, tensioner belt, auto tensioner and water pump. I kept getting a rubber smell so after a couple months, I took the valve cover off and my new timing belt was half gone!!
I didn't have the time to tear into it again so a couple of weeks ago, I took it in to the Honda shop to have them redo it. I figured that we didn't get the new auto tensioner adjusted out correctly and it wasn't keeping enough tension on the belt and letting it walk off the front of the cam gears.
The mechanic at the Honda dealership installed a new timing belt. When he cranked it up the timing belt automatically started coming to the front. He thought it was possibly the casting on the new waterpump that was making something not sit just right, thus letting the belt come off. So, he put on a new water pump along with a new tesioner pulley ($200). Long story short, that it didn't fix it. I took it back in last week. They took it apart again, and still didn't find anything.
They called Honda technical and I think they said there had been maybe 5 documented cases of this in the last 7 years. Unfotunetly, none of them had a resolution!! Honda technical suggested that it may be play in the crank. The mechanic checked that and said everything was ok. Honda technical also suggested that the cam journals were possibly worn and with the new belt and tensioner on there was just more pressure on the cam gears pulling them down and maybe they were at a slight downward angle now which was letting the timing belt walk off the front of the gears. I relize that those two scenarios are very long shots, especially with an engine with only 112k. That has been taken very good care of for the last 40k miles and I suspect that it was as well by the first owner.
However, the only part that we replaced that the honda place didn't replace was the auto tensioner.
The only other thing that I thought it could remotely be is that the cam gears were somehow warped when we put on the new timing belt.
What would it be about the auto tensioner that would be letting the timing belt walk off like that?
Hope we can find a resolution! Don't want to lose my engine or have to rebuild the engine in an attempt to try and get this problem worked out.
Please keep me posted. I will post any new news I get.
Merry Christmas,
Michael

Try replacing the bolt I described above. In this picture it is just left of the water pump pulley:
This is a long, unsupported bolt, so when people torque it without supporting the end of the wrench it can get bent. Apply torque only, not a side load. I bet you could also fix it if you mark it with a sharpie, take it out, bend it back, and reinstall it. Changing to the manual tensioner will also "fix" it.
