Yes, engine dynos are useless, I just happen to be stuck with one. Wish I could get a Dyno-Jet like all the F-1 Mfg. and NASCAR engine builders use.

roughly how much does the filtration setup cost in US dollars??
and off topic but is there a certain crankpulley you personally prefer for the bvtec engine don?? i noticed you are running what looks to be a CTR pulley on this engine.

Thanks Matt, If the filter is kept away from the stacks is does not cause any air flow problems. The filter has a metal stay so it cannot be "sucked" in. It seens as long as the filter is stable, and free flowing "foam" it does not affect the mass air flow. I have had other filters on webers and plenum manifolds drop BHP numbers by very large numbers. I still think we need "box' and external air hose over these and it will pick up more "installed" BHP above 60 mph.

That engine is actually getting a Fluidamper as his standalone will read off the cam. That engine is a GRS stroke so the CTR pulley would not bother me. 92-95-98 stroke cranks have more flex and ocilations and should have a dampner to help remove some ocilations ( not remove dampen) to prevent harmonic failure.
List on the fiberglass box is $86.00 that filter is $100.00 a longer one is $110.00

Don, that is the exact Pipercross setup I have for my Webers--its either KK500 or KK600--looks like the same depth too, 3.5". The standard flat aluminum backing plate is around $50 (although it looks like you are using a recessed fiberglass plate) and the filters themselves are around $100--there are also ITG which are very similar and some people think the ITG are a little higher quality. On the Pipercross website they rate the 3.5" depth ones to at least 230 hp. An advantage over Pipercross/ITG style (foam) over a generic K&N style is that since the K&N only flows from the sides--there has to be quite a bit of clearance between the mouth of the air horn to the edge of the filter--with the Pipercross/ITG, the horns can go much closer letting you fit longer air horns for better performance. Plus, there are 1/4 turn fasteners holding the foam to the backing plate--you would be stupid not to run a setup like this if you have sidedraft carbs or ITBs. The worst, as far as airflow is concerned are those "socks" that fit on each individual horn. Actually--I don't know that for a fact--but it seems to be pretty common knowledge. Hey Don, have you ever tested the "sock" type that fits on the horns versus a foam panel type versus just air horns (no filter)?

That is a Jenvey backing plate that they had made. Probably a bit deeper in length.I have seen the "sock" filters colapse. Especially the one's designed for go-karts bikes. A 12 BHP Briggs is still only pulling air for a 48 BHP 4 cyl. A 100 BHP bike pulls less air than a 300 BHP Honda.

I hear that those guys use some dyno that costs millions-and it does everything. Simulates engine braking, starts the motor, and even tunes it for you
You need to up your equipment budget

We had a sock filter rip itself in half and suck into the velocity stack, luckily it got caught on the throttle plate before doing any real damage.

didnt you know, "street tuning" is the only way to test the engine's abilities. haha dynos are not needed! Butt dynos are the only true test of power.
