What do you guys think of the 1990 cb-1 for a first bike. I found one and the guy may be willing to trade for my acura cl daily. I've done some research and it seems like a well loved bike. I'm planning on taking the msf regardless in late october, just wanted to know if their is anything specific to this bike you guys could add(things to look out for etc)

I had a CB400 Super Four NC31, it is the same bike as the CB-1 you guys get, except for some little changes. The engines are the same (NC23E).

It is really a GREAT starter bike, very docile in the low RPM range, but once it is past 7k RPM, it will start to pull nicely. It is tame enough to ride around the city, and will pull up nicely once you start to get more acquainted with it.

The low seat weight helps a lot for a rookie. Also, even though it weights about the same as a GS500, it just feels lighter. Good things for a novice rider.

If the bike is in good shape, it shouldn't give you any problems...in over 18k miles of ownership I only had to do the following:

- New spark plugs
- Cleaned the carbs twice
- Changed sprockets and chain twice
- Had to repair the starter engine, just had to change the carbon brushes. A really cheap fix.
- Tires, I used GT501F, seems like the best balance between grip and wear. Keep true to the original sizes, 110/70R17 front and 140/70R17 rear. If you feel inclined to more spirited riding, you could try a 150/60R17 rear, if you find better, more sticky rubber.
- Voltage Regulator/Rectifier. Typical problem in most Hondas. It went foul on me after more than a year and a half of ownership.

Other than that, she was the most reliable vehicle I've ever had...and boy, did I worked her hard. Look around for some of my posts in the forum, there should be some pics and info about her. Feel free to PM or contact me for any further questions...I have many forums and pages saved.

thanks for the help man. I just sent him some pics of the cl, he seemed interested before so we'll see if he bites. I was up till like 5 am reading a bunch of stuff on the bike and buying gear. He asking 3k which is maybe a lil high, but the bike looks brand new, powdercoated frame, new paint, it looks immaculate. Ive been looking at older 250 ninjas(pre 08) and I just couldn't get into the look of them at all. I'll let you know what happens

I've been doing some research on the SV650 lately. What're your guys thoughts on that versus a Ninja 250 as a first bike?

Most likely going to pick something up next spring/summer. The MSF courses are over for the year back in NY, but the signup starts in early January. I'm thinking of doing one during the week on my spring break.

Honestly you can start fine on a sv650 if you respect it, but I belive you will become a better rider if you start with something slower.

Thanks.

I have a friend that might be unloading an 08 Ninja 250 in the spring, so I might try to pick that up from him.
