What's the difference between OEM HID projector and NON HID projector.
As everyone is saying OEM HID is always better than after market..
and i was thinking are there any difference between the projector on OME HID (JDM) and NON HID (JDM).
I have a question.. Is there any difference between them??
I am guessing they are the same..
I was just wondering

HID = High intensity diode .....so much brighter and focused white light
Standard Projector = magnified and projected halogen lights
EDIT: See Skafia's post on his HID swap

err...not halogen/hid Mr. JDM dude,
hes talking about the projectors themselves...in which case they are not the same. (for those english-challenged individuals who did not understand my post above)
btw Mr. JDM dude, Mr. Sparkles says DoMo!

Re: What's the difference between OEM HID projector and NON HID projector. (Soup ****)
Well Mr. ****...first of all, I probably comprehend, speak, read , and write English (among a few other languages) at a far higher level than you do, but I won't go there with that.
Anyways, as far as the projectors themselves (as Mr. **** stated above) they are different.
If you are indeed talking about the lighting quality of the HID's as compared to the halogens, they are again different.
Bottom line....they are different...

Also, the shield in HID projectors blocks the yellow light from the bottow of the HID capsule, just allowing the white light from the top. Halogen projectors do not do this as efficiently and you get some yellow light mixed in. This means that HID bulbs in halogen projectors appear white/yellow instead of white/blue.

Well, I promised I'd show how this works.
The full instructions with detailed photos can be found here.
http://www.houseofthud.com/cartech/hids
Do check it out.
Here are some snippets..
That's the Hella projector shield. (screwhole already drilled)
That is the new brass shield.
mounted.
Plus alternate orientation (shown above) for a modified splash. I like this one best and will probably use.
Before and after. (Note this is with a 55 watt halogen bulb. The HID kit will be here next week)
The modified orientation..
Took me only 20 minutes to make both shields.. and a couple hours to test
and document everything. Also did a test where I painted the new shield black
to eliminate stray reflections, and found absolutely zero difference in the light
pattern between that and the unpainted one. To be absolutely sure I
took photos of each pattern at F4.4 1/15th 1/30th and 1/60th with
all different configurations so I could look for any stray light, and found nothing.
The area above the cutoff was virtually identical in all of them.
The final shields are thus unpainted.
I'll try to stick the HIDs into the same housing and add some photos of it
when they get here next week.
The brass sheet cost about $2, and 4 screws were $0.07/each,
Need tin snips, a drill and a screwdriver. My hella projector
housing is held together with 3 philips screws. The shield and lens
assemble is held to the rear reflector with 4 philips screws.

Is there anyone who can say it for sure it's different?? How so??

For starters, the non-HID projector is larger.

yep, shield looks different, and the reflector would have to be a different shape because of the different beam patterns on the ground (halogen projector = parabolic light patterns on the ground, hot spots in front of the car if it has HID, OEM HID projector = very wide evenly dispersed beam pattern, no hot spots).

Re: What's the difference between OEM HID projector and NON HID projector. (itr1244)
its ironic how this topic was posted. Lots of stuff i didn't know but here's the thing.I think its kinda weird. I had HID's off an Acura 3.2 CL and i put them into my USDM headlights and the beam pattern was just perfect.I wish i can find a picture and if i do, i will amend this post.
Just last night i had to fit the D2S HID bulb into my non HID JDM headlights and the beam pattern's scattered just like the post said. The lights were angled towards the outside so the middle is a little dark. The beam is pointed very low as well. When i put the HID's into my USDM headlights, the beam patter was fine. My conclusion to this was that the USDM and JDM non HID housings were different but are they the same? I don't see how the housings could be different though. Anyone have answers or solutions to this? I aimed the headlight beam as far in towards the center and as far up as i possibly could. I don't feel like paying another grand for HID headlights and i want to make this as cost effective and convienant as possible. Anyone?hahaha

For me the beam pattern is just fine with my USDM projector IMO..
It's not as sharp as OEM ones but still hella better than stock light..

This is S2K and my Philips 4300K HID
When i took this picture i was more close to right( close to S2K)
The beam pattern on my car is more wide than the S2K..
But as you can see the road surface is not ferfactly even.
i dont know if this helps..

Re: What's the difference between OEM HID projector and NON HID projector. (itr1244)
well, based on your pic, i guess its prolly an installation thing for me. Its weird cause i installed both both headlights the same on my USDM and JDM,yet the JDM's beam is off. I know its a pain but is there any way you can break down how you installed the HID's?

I installed "normal" just plug and play.. and i aimed it a little high..
When installed it was aiming lower than my stock halogen lights. so i just aimed it "little bit" higher..
i didnt do anything about vertical aiming..

It doesn't look like mine
I have one bad projector and my camera sucks, but nonetheless, OEM HID owns!

Re: What's the difference between OEM HID projector and NON HID projector. (itr1244)
if you take the pic of the beam pattern further away on your projector's you will not see a sharp cutoff like that. there will be alot of scattered light. only way you'll be able to tell is if you actually ride in a car with an OEM HID equipped projector, the difference is night and day.
