turn signal relay clicking
My turn signal relay started clicking randomly on its own. The lights don't flash when it is doing this. The turn signals and hazard works normally when activated. It just the relay has a mind of its own. Click ....click click...............click......................cli ck click click....click.
I replaced the relay with a new unit.. same thing.
What controls the relay to make it click? maybe I have a loosed or crossed connection.
Seems to click more when its cold.. and after the car is all warmed up barely notice at all. Doesn't happen with bumps in the road. I can be sitting with the key on but engine off and the clicking will be random.

Re: turn signal relay clicking
I hit some other forums for different cars that other people had the same exact problem.. seems to be grease in the steering switch goes bad and needs to be cleaned out .. little metal particles can bridge the gap and make the relay click...
I'll have to take it apart and see if I can clean mine.

Re: turn signal relay clicking
YES.
Over time little bits of the copper contacts mix with the old grease and a tiny connection is made.. So just open it up and clean/re-lube.

Re: turn signal relay clicking
This is the only place on the web that I've seen address this problem. That clicking is driving my wife and I, insane!! Any suggestions on how to remove the steering wheel cover without setting off the airbag? I've got an '03 Odyssey if that makes any difference. As I understand it, just pulling the fuse isn't good enough. I'll be more than happy to record this and put it on youtube with credit to this site and whoever helps. Thanks!

Jooky5, thanks! I have posted to the Ody-Club on this as well as Youtube under SGTJASONSHROUT, but you nailed the problem. It took me a while to get that switch off, but now that I know how to get it off, it should only take someone about 30 min. to an hour of their life to fix this. Amazing how something like that can cause so much misery. Anyhow, thanks again for leading me to the water.

Re: turn signal relay clicking
For anyone else who is having this problem, there is no need to take off the steering wheel.
Remove bottom column cover, loosen the top column cover
Remove 2 screws from the signal switch
Pry the two end tabs up, and pull laterally to the left on the switch.
From there, just disassemble the switch where the connector plugs in
Note the position of things before and after removing the base plate
Clean up the residue, and lube as necessary
Put the switch back together and function check it before reattaching it to the column.

Lots of copper fillings in the grease. Cleaned with contact cleaner, relubed with dielectric grease, reset the ecu, life is good.
Before fixing the short in the indicator switch everthing electircal was going out: gauge fuse, channel in the radio, throttle position sensor. Cleaned and replaced a lot of parts as a result of the short.
Thanks for reaponding to your own post!
