your check engine light is on because you dont have a knock sensor and you have a gsr ecu. Sence its an lsvtec its using an ls bottem which does not have a knock sensor. Your light is on because your ecu requies the knock sensor to adjust the timing for optimal performance. Using aftermarker tuning software people do sometimes disable the knock sensor. For stock applications i would put one in.
Sence the ls block does not have a spot to put, lots of people will just mod the alternator bracket and monting bolt hole to the right of the motor (closer to center of engine) take the bolt out and tap it to the same thread as the knock sensor and then screw the knock sensor in to hold the bracket. Then just run the wires to the proper pin outs on the ecu

as far as im concern ls/vtec requires tuning since theres not an ecu made for this set up from the factory, most of the guys that do this sep up use a P28 ecu and get it chip for ls/vtec.
