Default issue with clear cost peeling off?

well i painted my engine bay about 2-3 years ago & when i was adding cage 2 my car recently i used my air gun toblow some stuff around my welds. about 125psi comming out of a 1/4 inch hole. & on top of my fender wells all the clear coat was jsut peeling off in sheets. wondering if i did something wrong when i painted it or just the high air pressure getting under it? never came off before.

when i painted the car i put white house of colors base coat. let it dry up for about 20 minutes then added my clear. ( one mistake i did make was i put the blue pearl powder in the clear not the base coat, & put alot ) probably put to much cause the color came out a little on the tan side. so maybe the powder messed it up?

what u guys think. wondering if i need to finish taking ALL the clear off or jsut sade whats left & go over it. tried air on other spots & nothing happens.

also whats the best way to knock that coating down in the fender wells, wire wheel ? or can u just smooth it up some & put a few nice wet coats of primer right over the crap?

also notice the lines along the joint sealer crap where it stoped peeling off

How did you prep and clean it? The Pearl should not have made any difference. Plus your base peeled too. It appears to be prep or cleaning problems

no the base didnt peal. the white is the base. the primer u see is new from when i added the extra cage section. cleaned it the same way i do everything wax/grease remover. then i sprayed the white base let it sit for about 20 min then sprayed the clear on with the pearl powder in it.

did this in my driveway but that shouldent really matter i wold think (no thier wasnt dust flying everywhere) exp to cause this.

also i always cleaned my car with simple green but cant believe that would cause it to flake off. it would of eaten through if anything

Oh I thought it looked like the white peeled off on the corner of the shock tower. Did you mix the clear to the correct ratio?

If that white is your basecoat then why is it so shiny? Thats the problem.

He said he put so much pearl in the clear that it turned it beige. Said he sprayed the base and then cleared it 20 minutes later. I can't figure out why the base is so shiny. Who knows. If he didn't say otherwise it just looks like it was painted over a unscuffed surface.

Can't remember the name of the clear I'll check when I get home. Don't know why the base is so shinny either. Also your not supposed to sand the base before clear if your putting it on right after right? Does it need to tottaly cure first or just a 20 min or so? Also everything was mixed correctly in the paint cups as per ratio. seems to be the only area I'll try the radiator support when I get home see if I can get that to flake off. that area was always being worked over & should of showed a flaw first for shure

Nope you are correct. You do not sand the base before clear. The base just needs to flash off before clear. Time depends on the temperature out, and the temp of the reducer you are using. But 20 minutes was probably fine.

Looks like you put clear over a single-stage white base....that's probably why it is so shiny. Basecoats flash to a dull finish ideal for topcoats.

you just answer your own question. CLEANING WITH SIMPLE GREEN! I don't know if this stuff is a volitale as Purple Power or Super Clean but these two can take and dull off paint. Also if you didn't wipe it right off when you were cleaning it could've soaked into your panels and even and wax and grease remover couldn't take care of all of that. The best thing to do is water it down and clean it with soap and redo it all over again.

never used the simple green until the car was painted. also used it on the outside of the the car & never had a problem. so dont really think that was it.

the outside has been primer only for 3 years ho9lding strong. but the simple green takes rubber off from the track very well

Ya, Simple green is not the problem.
