Default Why Texas > California. Car thief whooped!

HOUSTON -- A woman who was 8 months pregnant fatally shot a man who was breaking into her car, police told KPRC Local 2.

Suspected Burglar Killed
Houston police said the woman spotted a 19-year-old in the parking lot of the Pinemont Forest Apartments in the 5900 block of Pinemont Street at about 9 p.m. Monday.
The woman retrieved a shotgun and fired one time from her second-floor apartment, which was nearby, police said.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene. His name was not released.
"It's scary to know that something so close can happen," said Gracie Melendez, a resident. "I don't think I would have the guts to shoot anybody or not even scare them -- shoot up in the air. I don't think I could handle a gun."
The woman was questioned and released without charges.
Police relocated the woman and her family for their safety.

If that happened here, the victim's family would have sued and WON. This is awesome.

Wow that just made my day. I would love to live in Texas, that is so awesome. I wonder what race the offender was. Hopefully he wasn't black so the Black Panthers don't try to turn this into a race war, like with Joe Horn.

Texas isn't the only state that has ghetto (government funded) neighborhoods.

There's something wrong with the news story. I don't think they've given us the important details that mitigate the shooting.

I take a moment to caution individuals praising this woman that in most jurisdictions of the United States, you cannot shoot someone to protect property. You'd more likely still be in jail awaiting arraignment for a homicide.

I have a feeling we do not know something...some important detail that made it a matter of life and death.

True but how many stories do you hear about those other states having completely lawful onsite executions of petty thieves.

Things are different in texas. It probably had something to do with her being a pregnant woman and him being a thug in the hood. Even around here where i live you are allowed to shoot people on your property no questions asked if you feel threatened

That's not applicable in Texas AFAIK.

Joe Horn, the name that has been mentioned in here was let off the hook and he shot someone to protect his neighbors property.

In Florida you would have to be able to swear that you felt that there was an immediate danger to life or limb, and you would have to appear credible to a judge.

In Florida it's still likely you'd be held for a number of hours while they performed an analysis of your story.

That seems normal to me.

The story from Texas, the way that it was reported in that media, does not seem normal to me.

In Virginia, you are allowed to stand your ground. You do not have to retreat until you have no place to go, the way you have to do in California and New York. But even though that's the case in Virginia, if it appear to a judge that a normal person with a normal person's common sense would have retreated, you might still be in trouble...each case is different.

I have to say that I really and truly do not believe you should shoot somebody over a car. It opens up too much to interpretation, it makes it too hard to regulate who the criminal really is.

IMHO.

But, that's just one stupid old man with an opinion.

Shot IN A PARKING LOT, from a second floor apartment building?

She could have pointed her shotgun out the window and yelled "Hey! Get the FVCK AWAY FROM MY CAR OR I'LL SHOOT YOU!", without putting her safety in jeopardy whatsover. Instead she fired a fatal shot, in a parking lot used by dozens of people.

Was the man armed? Was he even INSIDE of her car? What evidence is there that the guy was indeed trying to break into the car? Her word?

Unless there are a TON of details left out of this article, she shouldn't get off scott free for this one.

I'm not anti-gun. I'm perfectly OK with shooting someone who is violently trying to break into your residence. I'm even ok with shooting someone committing theft ON YOUR PROPERTY, if you have reasonable cause to believe that they're dangerous. But to not even WARN someone before you fatally shoot them, as they break into your car, IN A PARKING LOT. damn.

Oh yeah, I'm also not "pro-thug". I recognize that this car theif was likely some straight-up ghetto thug with multiple priors, and gang affiliations. Just to put that out there.

Well, like George said, this story is short on details. And we all know the devil's in the details.

Personally speaking, and this might get me thrown out of Texas, it's morally reprehensible to execute a man for trying to steal a car. For all I know he could've been trying to steal a $400 stereo, which would make this even more tragic.

It was a kid and anyone that's been around H-T long enough knows, kids don't have the best judgement in the World.

GTFO of texas, hippie! Even if kid is unarmed, and trying to steal a $20 stereo from your car which isn't even parked on your own property, even if he doesn't mean you any physical harm, you should STILL be able to kill the motherfvcker!!!!

I doubt that she meant to kill him. I don't know much about guns but I'd imagine it would be difficult for a pregnant woman to take a guy's head off from a second story window on purpose.
