Default is it worth fixing up or should i look for a new ride?

its a 96 civic dx hatch. AT transmission which is starting to slip. d16y7 engine.. i have to add oil to it every 4 days to keep it full. clear coat is fading. there are quite a few more problems that would need to be fixed in order to be satisfied. the good thing is its paid off. ive been back and forth the past 2 months weather i should fix it up right or just try to trade it and cash for something more mechanically sound. im in a pickle.

well you could do a number of things... i would do an auto to manual conversion since your AT is going. if you dont wanna do that, you could go with a full swap. and i wouldnt worry about paint, unless you really really think its necessary

find out why its leaking or burning so much oil, that is your main concern, next would be to do a manual tranny (even though it is getting harder and harder to find d series MTs)

fix it. People pratically throw AT's away, put a new one for cheap. then work on the rest. Far easier than converting to MT and you can save up the money for other repairs.

I think Honda Automatics can slip if you use something besides Honda ATF or the fluid gets old. Can someone else confirm that? Try draining and refilling it a couple times to see if it may fix it. Or, they're like $50 to replace...

Y7s are cheap, and any D16Y* is crud anyway... It may be two oil filter gaskets causing the leak, it could be a head gasket. Who knows, get in there and find out.

Honestly, I'd keep it if it's at least fairly rust free. The car sounds like it hasn't been molested, so you can build it up right instead of buying someone else's mess.

Really all depends on what you value. Do you want the car because it's a Honda, or because it's four wheels and a (not-so-awesome) engine?

Do you value doing the work yourself? Would you rather have a stick tranny? Do you like the car enough as a whole to keep it and build on it with what could be good potential?

Do a search for Automatic to manual swap. There is a great article somewhere.

Jusy dtive it till u save enough for a swap
U can get a y8 engine and tranny for like $450-500

Or a b18b complete swap for like $1000-1500 (everything)
It sounds like a fresh canvas dont worry bout paint

d16's arent so easy to find. I spent over a month with my eyes peeled, finally bought a y7 for $225 because there were no y8s or z6's. I was looking in a 150 mile radius too, so best of luck to you

Hmm. Seems to always be a few D's around my area for sale.

But I do agree, they aren't as easy as people make it seem.

I sold a Y7 and 5sp trans, for $200 last year.

Car's break down regardless. So the question is car payment or no car payment? Can you afford to get a new car with payments and afford to have IT break down? Probably not. My DD was rescued from a punk kid in VA and I've slowly nursed her back to health. She's at the shop right now getting boosted. No car payment. Wouldn't have been able to do any of that with a car payment AND insurance.

a guy in my area is selling a d15 motor and MT which he said has a new clutch in it for $350 the motor has 135k miles on it would it be worth checking out and possibly doing a full swap? ive been told the only way to the d16y7 any good is to put a turbo on it but im not sure if the d15 would be that much of an improvement either?

Don't bother. D15 is OBD1

Its not just the Y7 that isn't very capable, its D series in general.

Either save up for a B or just get a cheap D for the time being.

Depends on how much it would cost to fix all the problems.

if your loosing that much oil the motor needs to be rebuilt. id try and go to a junkyard and get another block and then swap it in and rebuild the one in ur car right now
