Good thing you got the plastic sheeting, it'll help out a lot to keep over spray off the walls an junk. Tip: use a stapler to staple the plastic to the walls and stuff. (that is, if you don't care about putting staples in the walls. The holes are tiny, when you pull them out.

My project it crawling at a snails pace, I keep running out of money. I'm about to get a set of wheels off this guy in the marketplace, after I get that, then I'm going to sand some more. I just need more supplies really. I'm having a hard time getting the drivers side of the front bumper, the part closest to the wheel, the right shape. It kinda bulges out. I showed it to the guy that's going to paint my car. And he kinda laughed, saying that I'm being too perfectionist about it. I'm like "Damn dude, I want this to be seriously perfect."
Nice man...at least you're getting some wheels! If remember correctly you were thinking TE37's...is that what you ended up with?

I'm going broke too...but I have to just deal with it right now so I can get my car back to a driveable point ASAP! That's good that you can take the time to get it perfect though...you'll be glad you did. I'm having to compromise on some things because I'm running out of time, but at least it will be way better than it was.

Good tip with the staples...I should have checked HT about an hour ago because I just spent an hour fighting with duct tape, hahaha. Next time!

You have any suggestions for the question in my last post about prepping the primer?

But you're completely right; If that wasn't taken care of it would definitely repeat the problem down the the road.

What I'm still trying to figure out is the coating on the mirrors. I peeled off the paint on one of the mirrors to see what it was, and it is like a sort of rough tan coating...almost like the surface of masking tape, only there aren't any seams. I guess It just needs a good priming and it should be OK. It was never primed last time, so it just didn't stick. They're OEM mirrors, so I was kind of expecting black plastic underneath.

As for the new CF hood, I won't be clearing the new one, because it looks incredible as is...I just can't bring myself to hit that with sandpaper. If it fades down the road, I'll take care of it then. I take pretty good car of my car as far as keeping it clean and waxed, so I'm hopeful that it will last for a while.

Thanks for the comments so far! I've almost got the scuffing/filler work done on the passenger side, so more pictures tomorrow or Monday.

your mirrors are plastic, the previous painter probably didnt prep it right, also they didnt mix the paint correctly. if they used a 2 part setup they either mixed it too hot or not hot enough, the mixture has to be precise. different surfaces call for different mixtures regaurdless of what the paint manufacturer says. thats why most cars just have plain black mirrors. and if thy used a one step paint well then its obvious why it didnt stick, for small things like mirrors i use a typical spraypaint primer- kind u get at walmart, sounds unprofessional but belive me it works, also if u dont have one, invest in a DA sander (dual action) and a file block, they work great for sanding.the key to a good paintjob is a good primer, and also watch the filler around edges of moving parts, doors, hoods, hatches, etc for they will crack over time if to much is applied. for things like key holes, dont tape them-youll never get them perfect and it will look like hell, either take them out (pain in the ass) or apply vasoline over them (petroleum jelly). then wipe them off very carefully before the each coat is dry. re applying on every coat. also that plastic on the sun roof is sketchy, the tape has to be perfect, if not your going to hater your self. i know its only for dust but be carefull when paiting. a first paint job will determine your next. it probably wont be perfect, but with enough time help and effort it will be something to be proud of. i like to see people trying new things. bodyork is almost a lost art, keep up the good work man!

I used red Scotchbrite pads to scuff the factory finish very successfully, and would very much prefer that over sandpaper for the jambs.

I wanted to get TE37's but after looking around a lot, I concluded that there were a lot of TE's out there, and wanted something different. I ended up getting a set of Work XSA02c's. There's just something about a mirror lip that I can't say no to! Ha ha, should be here on monday.

As for the primer, Yes, you can scuff the jambs (if of course, you are certian whatever's under there is good. Namely, the factory finish.) Just scuff the jambs and shoot it. the sanding with the 400/600 is to get it straight and flat, but there's no need for that in the jambs.

I have five days in a row off in november, so I'm crossing my fingers and hoping to get it done, prep/done then. And just get it sanded, and sealed. Hopefully painted at the same time, but if not, then just prep 100 percent done.

Ok, so I really have not been good with updates. Pictures should be coming on Sunday at the latest, but for now:

Last week: Tried to spray primer with my crappy Titan gun and had a horrible experience. Tired, frustrated, and broke, I had a paint shop give me a quote to finish it. Way more than I could afford or justify putting myself in debt for. Decided to tough it out, and ordered the 1.8mm tip version of the 1.4mm Astro gun I already had.

This week: Primer gun came, and the next try went much better. Primed every piece, including jambs and small things like handles, mirrors, gas door, etc. Sanding starts tomorrow, and will continue into next week! But the big news! I may be able to use a spray booth at a local tech school that my dad is active with.

Just a few things I've learned so far: When starting a project like this, plan for it to take 3 times as long as you think, and cost far more. And having friends that are willing to help at any time of the week/day. Also, have access to a number of cars that you can borrow! My family has been awesome, because otherwise I wouldn't be able to do this project at all.

Thanks for the tips man! I prepped the mirrors the other day, with a good sanding and a coat of primer, and they look to be in good shape. You were right, in that they were not primed, but also sprayed with single stage. Moisture got under in one spot, and it just went downhill from there. And I made sure to take out everything that I could...I had to convince myself to not take out the hatch glass so I wouldn't have a tape line, so that should give you an idea, haha. And the whole car got a new taping before I sprayed...that stuff on the sunroof was REAL sketchy, but it helped to keep sanding dust out while I did body work.

Thanks a lot for the encouragement...it helps a lot! Finding the motivation to keep doing things correctly is probably the most challenging part of all of this. I love trying new things, but I'm really testing my limits on this one. I actually got a quote from a paint shop to finish it, but the number was way more then I could justify for a car this old.

Cool...I just searched them, and they will definitely look awesome on your ride.

Thanks for answering the question! I'm glad I don't have sand all the jambs, that's for sure. The factory paint was in good shape, so I'll just scuff the primer and be good to go.

Hope you can get all that done in 5 days! I'll keep an eye out for updates.

Alright, as promised here are some more pictures. I'm done primer and have now moved onto sanding everything, so it's slow going again. Since this project is taking longer than I had hoped, I have to start working part time again and will have to finish this while school is going on. I'm just glad that I go to a local college.

Anywho, here goes...

New tape job:

Sunroof taped up a little bit better

Alright, so I sprayed the car first and my technique wasn't spectacular. I did an extra coat on here though, and I'm pretty sure that I can sand it smooth still. Don't mind the stripes! I've gotten much better since then.

I wish the garage was always this clean, but after it looked like a bomb hit it, I decied to take a few hours and tidy up. This was before I started to sand.

No more stripes!

It keeps raining here, so I have to keep it covered:

So for now, it's just sanding and more sanding, so there won't be any major updates unless something goes wrong, or I start cutting in the jambs. Thanks for following a long guys!

Not too much really...still sanding. I had to reprime a lot of things, so it's taking a while. I should be able to finish sanding this weekend, and then It will be ready to go sometime soon. I've given up on guessing when, because it always takes longer than I estimate, haha.

I'm hoping tomorrow if the FINAL day of sanding/prep! I just have to block the passenger side with 600, and then go over the jambs again where guidecoat overspray ended up in them after primer touchups.

I'm still waiting to hear on whether or not I'm going to be able to use a booth, so it will be on hold until that gets resolved. Stay tuned for big updates soon hopefully!

looks really good for a garage paint job!!! take your time and it will turn out good!!!! i highly suggest covering the ceiling in your garage with plastic it will help prevent dust or anything else from falling onto the finish! also i would suggest several good coats of clear depending on the weather let it flash between coats. maybe put a extra coat or 2 on the roof and top of deck lid. and my final suggestion pay to have the 1/4 windows removed thats just another place for the prior shitty paint to start flaking from!!! most glass companies will come to you and remove/then come back when your done and reinstall them. best of luck looks really good so far

Thanks,

If all goes well, I won't even be painting it in the garage (fingers crossed), although that was the original plan. We'll see...

Luckily the paint up against the quarter windows was all factory and in good shape, but you're probably right that that would have been a good idea. I was able to get a good tape line though, so I'll just stick with that for now. Thanks for the tip though! I'll remember that for the future.

no problem! keep in mind also if you dont have it, the bumper clear coat should have flex additive. will kep protect from massive rock chips.
