Evan's build thread- J32A2 V6 EH3 build-up
Few reasons for this swap, in no particular order-
- Honda reliability
- Very flat torque curve
- Close ratio 6 speed LSD transmission
- HPDE, daily driving, and drag racing fun
- My race car is slow as *****, so I need something fast
- Something fairly original, especially in the PNW
- I love these engines. Very smooth, very fast, and MUCH potential. I've worked with the J series for many years in the Pilot/Accord/Odyssey platforms, and would love to do something different with it.
Parts needed:
Well, I purchased a wrecked 2003 CL-S. Anybody wondering, the 6 speed MT was only available in 2003 in the CL-S, so yes, it is pretty rare. I picked up the entire car from a Russian family who bought the salvaged car for the front end sheet metal- engine fired up first crank with no CEL's and oil was still golden
I want to make this swap as OE as possible, while using one-off mounts to maintain as much ground clearance as possible. I may go as far as adapting the CL cluster into the EG, depending on how I feel that will look. I'm sick of having to gut my car to gain some speed. After doing this, I'll run full interior, keeping a clean look, that will be MUCH faster around the track than ever before.
This weekend will make for some updated pictures as I remove the drivetrain from the CL and prep it for un needed parts, new clutch, etc.
Onto some before pictures....
cell phone FTL- better pics to come.
as purchased(at my work)
Front end stripped for body panels- no broken mounts/harness clips/etc
The car it's going in....had a B16 swap with some transmission work. I'll maintain the Spoon exterior pieces, but the hood will end up off the car, for engine clearance issues
Will update this thread whenever possible. Wish me/us luck

yup, Arizona Performance Imports utilizing HASport mounts. There were my inspiration for this build.

wtf- haven't seen that yet!
Spoke with Tim Beadle on the phone this morning(he's the one with the white hatch from API with the V6 swap). Very nice guy- told him my plans, etc.
If anyone wants mounts, contact Arizona Performance Imports- I'm making my own, but not everyone can do that.
Got the swap out today, tearing down the top end. Not a single leak- just some efflorescence from being under a tarp in Portland for several months.
Will have pics later!

This build will show case Evan's skill and attention to detail. We should all be lucky to have a stand up guy who owns a shop like he does close to us.

Nice you going to use the hasport mounts or use your own ? Nice swap guy few hours from here did it in his EJ1 and the thing went 12.7 stock with megan headers mickey mouse exhaust and some stand alone.
Im thinking of doing this swap the J32A2 into my EL next year possibly. make 300whp and call it a day.

Shop in toronto, right? The orange one?
The only 3 I know that exist are his, Tim Beadle's white EG, and one in South America
I'm making my own mounts. HAsport pretty much stole the design from an "unnamed" individual. They personally have not even performed the swap, so how can they sell the mounts? With their mounts, you can't run the stock alternator location either...I want it to sit where I think it should sit.
I will have some extra weight up front, but a lot of the new weight will be behind the front shock towers(on a B series, all the weight is in front). This will help a little with distribution.
Lately, I have been parting out the CL to make some room and some spare monies for misc pieces.
Seats, door panels, interior, etc is pretty much all gone now.
Pulling my B16 this week and will get some progress pics too!

Good info to know. I'm really glad to see people starting to look at the J-series as a viable swap option. And you found a 6speed to boot! Rare indeed. I really hope you are able to get up a bunch of pictures and info of your custom made mounts. That seems like the main drawback to this swap compared to others. Also, have any idea what axles you are going to use (custom, probably DSS?).
And finally, what kind of engine management do you think you'll wind up using? Full custom or just take the stock computer over?
When you are done this is going to be sick

Re: (Tnwagon)
Run the stock computer for now. I plan on keeping all of the emissions system minus the EVAP parts, as it would not be worth the hassle. secondary O2, EGR, etc are all going to be working.
The J series is a great engine. The weight will be a little bit of an issue, as well as the overall height, but these are easy to work around.
The J32A2 sits 3 inches taller than a B18B. The width is an inch less, so it fits in the frame rails perfectly
Updated will be more often as I get some free time in the next week or so

Re: (Evs-One)
The stock computer accounts for a crapload of things, as I'm sure you know. I'll take one piece for example, the motor mounts. I'm not sure if the CL-S had the mounts that fed a signal to the computer, but if it does, how are you going to account for this? I assume that running the ECU without some systems (EVAP for example) might cause it to act oddly.
It's probably impossible to tell up front, I just hope you can shed some light on these kinds of things as you go through your swap. As it stands right now, there is not much out there to go off of, so I guess you are the pioneer.
