My P89

My Mini-14

It looks a little different now. It's got a different handgaurd and a OD Hogue Stock. I'll get some newer pics up soon.

The scope is on my 10/22 now. Does any one know where to get a good rear sight for the mini?

I'm not aware of anybody having consciously made that decision, but you have to admit that it would be virtually impossible for anybody to regulate state laws and local ordinances. There are just too many rules regarding sales.

Mini 14s are very nice rifles.. I had one when I was in the corps a few years ago.. Sold it for like $350 because I didn't want to get caught with it in the barracks. Now you can't touch a new one for under $500.

Not that I've had to use it, but I've been comfortable with Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P in my Compact.

The round make a lot of the difference when you dealing with 9mm. I worked with a guy who was shot, the only reason he's still alive is that it was FMJ. Also during my CWP class I was told to shoot until they drop. While it may look bad to shoot someone 3-4 times vs once, I know the State laws would be on my side if I ever needed to defend my home.

Well, that's fine, but that's nowhere near as good a stopper as something like the .357 125 gr Remington, or the .45 ACP Golden Sabre or Hydra Shok.

It's also about ten percentage points below the 115 gr +P+ LE round.

From that choice, I'd assume you have some kind of penetration scenario you're trying to compensate for, is that right?

Which 115gr +P+ LE round are you referring to?

Shane recommended Gold Dots due to wound cavity, IIRC.

Most of those knives were aquired. (which I can't say, no not stolen) and I've only bought two knives. (Kershaw and Spyderco)

Permanent cavity or temporary cavity? Why would that be the single determinant?

Everything like this is always controversial, but I cannot imagine anything better to go by than using the accumulated histories of the rounds used by police departments around the world. You can argue about what exactly is a one-shot, or whether or not something really *was* a one-shot if you know the definition, but there's no arguing with a round's quantifiable history once a number of shootings have occurred with the round.

IMHO.

As to your specific question, Federal, Remington and Cor-Bon all product a 115 gr Speer bullet +P+ round with the same ballistics and I would consider them a statistical dead heat.

With the round you're using now, it seems to me, that if you're willing to drop into the 80's with one-shot stops you might as well go all the way down to the Nyclad 124 gr normal pressure. It's very reliable and very clean. The instant expandability provided by having no metal jacket allows the round to perform as well as many +P rounds.

Not that I know a lot about this stuff.

I don't seem to be able to do that right now. I'm on the way to a three-day meeting in the mountains, but I sent a quick query and I got back a long set of questions to answer before I could get details.

I do know that the only two being recommended to me right now are the 230 gr Hydra Shok (Federal) and the 185 gr Remington Golden Sabre.

Both of those rounds are at 96%, including quite a few shots with the stopped person wearing armour. Both of those rounds, at the moment, appear to be exceeding the reliability of the best .357 rounds that are being recommended.

I remember two years ago that the Winchester Black Talon was around 88% one shot stops. There was some controversy about that round, but I don't remember.

You know, a lot of people, even a lot of people in law enforcement, think the retention of one-shot stops in the national and Interpol data bases is basically bull. They think that it's a trendy compilation, and they're afraid a new round that is potentially excellent will come out without getting any support because it doesn't have a high enough tabulation.

Personally, I don't see how you can argue with an international record of over 200 one shot stops going to a single particular round, however. It's an irrefutable quantitative analysis that stands out among all the apocryphal calculations of wound cavities, hydrostatic shock, trauma and nerve shock, and I don't know what all else.

I mean, it seems to me that the facts are right there in black and white for quantitative analysis w/out having to rely on pesky and unproved formulae.

Still looking for a public database for you. Only one that shows up on the way out the door is one that is two years old, so I do not dare really ask you to rely on it.

Thanks GK, that's some genuinely helpful stuff, now I have to find out of it's even legal to use in CA< (who knows with this state) I'm sure I can order it online though if nobody sells it here.

However I do wanna stay legal!

IIRC it had something to do with them producing such severe shock trauma that people were dieing from shock not the wound itself. I also think I recall an excessively high rate of amputation after limb shots being a deciding factor.

So far I havent found anything that says you can't use it but if I recall correctly the Black Talon was a Police issue round, in CA at least. I'm just going to call the DOJ and ask.

On a side not

WANT!
