Default 01 Civic intermittent overheating

I have a 01 Civic with about 150,000 miles. It has an intermittent overheating issue. It overheats only occasionally. I can sometimes go 500 miles or more without a problem then suddenly it will overheat and not stop overheating for an hour or so. Each time it starts to overheat I pull over and mess with it until it stops.

So far I have replaced the thermostat twice, the radiator cap, the radiator hoses and the radiator. I ran a compression test, I turned the motor over 5 times, all cylinders were right at 180.

Yesterday when it overheated I grabbed the hoses and they were extremely hard, while the car was overheating. Once it stopped overheating the hoses were not near as hard. I am thinking it is a pressure issue which is causing the water pump to be unable to circulate the water.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I should do next?

my car had the same problem; it has 150,000+ miles. I overheated and sometimes wouldn't even move at all when stepping on the accelerator. I took it to a shop and they said it was my rpm sensor (I forget the exact term, but I know it had to do with rpm timing). So I had the little computer chip replaced and now my rpms are timed right, as well as my car's drivability. You may have to also get your catalytic converter checked out because now that is my current issue soon after the problem with rpm timing.

That's exactly what it is. Try flushing your coolant system, and focus on the heater core section separately. It's not uncommon for the heater core to gunk up and become a flow issue.

After I did the compression test today I did the test that checks for hydro-carbons in the radiator. I did the test a couple times and each time it came up negative for hydro-carbons. I am pretty convinced it is not a blown head gasket.

I will try reverse flushing the heater core and see if that helps. I may just replace the heater core that way I don't have a half good heater core.

fines1,
Have you fixed your problem? RPM sensor...where is that located? I'm having a similar problem with my 01 civic.
