I'm shopping for some new wheels and I found some 17's that weigh in at about
20lbs and I was wondering if any of you guys running 17's have noticed and adverse effect on fuel economy. That is if you are running 205/40/17 which should be stock rolling diameter. I need to know if the increase in rotational mass if going to be worth the look. How much do stock 16" alloys weigh?

stock wheels are 15 inch. more mass will definately reduce MPG, will reduce acceleration, will increase deceleration and will also effect handling.

Exactly.

On top of all this, 17" rims don't look good on a Fit.

and on top of all of that, 20lbs is heavy as hell. wheels should be around 1 pound per inch or less. mine are 16s but i think im gettin better milege because they are really light.

17's look too big for a Fit, IMO. 16's are the biggest I would go. But to answer your question, yes, more mass on the outside of the wheel will result in less MPG. Your handling will actually be more crisp, due to the stiffer/shorter sidewalls, but accel, MPG will all suffer. I'd go with 16's and call it good.

And, yeah, like the other guy said, 20lbs is really heavy.

yeah, 16's look great on the fit. as a rule of thumb, only go 1" bigger than stock IMO

Sorry, I'm old school from the days when Honda entered F-1 and James Gardner was in the movie driving it. Even got a print signed by him from the movie.

Anyway, imho, large wheels and ultra low profile tires and style over function and look totally out of place on a Fit.

More rubber is a better ride, more safety, and better real-life handling. And looks lots better too, but that's just this old-phart talking.

Yeah, 17s look great on a Fit as long as you don't run 55 series sidewalls and don't even drop the car.. then any car can look bad on any wheel

I use 205/45-16 with light 04 Mini Cooper rims and feel great in curves! Lost about ten miles per half tank only.

It seems like every pound of rotating weight is like ten pounds of weight inside the car, although knowing having a passenger doesn't really affect your mileage, the weight shouldn't affect it much.

If your wheels weigh 20 lbs in total compared to stock wheels, it's just like constantly having a 200 lbs passenger.

The lower profile actually increases mileage due to reduction in flex loss, however a wider tire tread increases rolling resistance.

Heavier wheel DOES affect handling. You have that much more unsprung mass and suspension has to work that much harder to keep the tires in contact with the surface when you encounter small bumps.

LOL i'm sorry i just had to... but who cares man, put 17's on it. It'll be a small difference in fuel economy i'm sure, but prob not like 10mpg its like driving slightly up a hill, sure its no big deal, but over time theres gonna be some sorta mpg loss.
