Default 1967 S800. S2000 engine swap

thought this might be of some interest even though i'm in the U.K.

i bought this last year

when it came up for sale i just had to have it .

it has uprated suspension and a tuned 800cc engine . it has been a track / fun car for a long time

even though the engine is tuned to 100 bhp and revs to 10,000 rpm it's really slow compared to modern cars . so i have taken the decision to fit a different engine.

i wanted to keep it with Honda power but decided that a bike engine will make it a pain to drive so the decision was made to go for a S2000 engine

the plan is to run it on webbers with a stand alone ignition system and some sort of vtec controller (this will be on a budget so it wont have loads of money thrown at it)

so far i have bought the webbers, been given a noisy gearbox and given an exhaust manifold. i'll be trying for a scrap engine so i can gut it to make it lighter to take in and out of the engine bay and make all the mounts and mods nessesary before i buy a decent engine and gearbox

it came with a few spares , which i will sort out eventually and maybe sell

the car it self has uprated torsion bars and coilovers on the front with adjustable dampers, the rear is coil over with adjustable dampers

the door skins, front wings, nose panel and bonnet are fibre glass, the rest is metal. it has a pair of bucket seats and harnesses but no roll cage (at the moment)

look how small it is compared to my CRX

stripping it down

Brand new engine block failed to sell on ebay, maybe i should turn it into a coffee table

these will be rechromed and put back on

got these recently

and also i have these

the Accord i got as a tow vehicle for when the S800 needs to be moved (i'm the second owner), one CRX will be sold as i now have the Accord , the other CRX will have the roof cut off and turned into a Straman replica and i picked up a free low milage Ballad which i will use for spare parts for the CRX including the power steering (the ballad is not as good as it looks). so a few pick of the cars i have at the moment

anyway, there will be more posts as and whe i do more to the S800

Wow, I don't know what to say. First of all, welcome aboard, glad to see another vintage S-car owner here.

I know it's your car, and your money, and you'll do with it what you please, but in my opinion, it's a shame to see an S800 Coupe, with an original S800 engine (perhaps even numbers matching?), get hacked up to fit a "modern" engine.

If it's speed and "modern"-ism that you're after, why not just buy a modern car?

had a modern car.

had a S2000 for a couple of years , the only problem is that i like to fiddle with my cars

some of the S800 is fibre glass anyway and it could always be reverted back to the S800 engine but i've done a few miles in it and it does not go fast enough for the way it handles in the form it's in

the engine is not the original to the car either

once the mods have all been done then the car will get a body of overhaul to tidy it up

This is going to be fantastic! I have been doing up a budget for a s2000 conversion in my S600 Coupe, there is so much to consider! If the plans come off the drawing board and into action, I would love to share and bounce ideas with you.

will be cool to share ideas and thoughts

i fear the S600 is a lot harder due to the odd rear suspension set up and front drum brakes

there are 1970's opel brakes that will fit with a small amout of work, so i have been told . this will then mean that you will use different wheels that are more readily available

not sure how you can overcome the rear axle without a lot of modification .

the S800 has a 5 link live axle already so making a beefier one to the same dimentions will be a lot easier (the standard one turns the wrong way so this one is completly useless even if it could take the power)

Welcome, I see you've made the journey over from the UK CRX forum.

I hate to see an old car that could be restored "hacked up," but I will trust that you will do the job nicely.

If it were me, I would graft the S2000 engine and tranny into something that needs the upgrade, like a MGB.

since the car already appears to be a track car, which already has major non OEM body panels I say go for the S2000 swap! If it were an all original gem, id say leave it stock.

thats exactly it if it was totally standard then it it would be a different story (i probably wouldn't have bought it then anyway)

i thought about fitting metal panels back on until i found a front wing for sale for $1200

cbsdt, there would be people saying that an MGB should be left standard so i will never have the suport of everybody but i'm not doing this for anyone else , it's for me to have fun in but it's hardly going to be "hacked up"

loads of room for a bigger engine

these are the sorts of cars i normally work on as i'm a mechanic by trade

i snuck my S2000 in there

and this is where i work

http://www.ckldevelopments.co.uk/

i should be able to do a decent job of this

Indeed, the chain drive rear end makes things difficult. I need to see a later model chassis against mine to find out exactly how different it is. I was thinking going 4 link suspension. What do you think about the location of the steering column? The extractors surely would hit it? I know in Australia I will have to use a collapsible column to pass safetly regulations.

Have you seen the one with the turbocharged Fiat motor in it, I think it is... I'm pretty sure that guy swapped in a Ford 9 Inch rear end that he shortened to fit in the car. Judging by the looks of that rear end, it looks possible to do while keeping the chain drive setup in tact...

Oh my.. I love it.. I love every bit of it.. a CARB'D S2K engine? That's sick.. I'll keep it EFI and go ITB's but that's just me..

What a fantastic looking car.. I'm scared to even try looking for one, I can't imagine there are many out there anymore..

S800 is 5 link

i don't envy you trying to fit a live axle, that is going to be a huge job

iv'e got disc brackes at the front that could be enough to stop with if i can get enouh cooling and decent pads. then they could be changed at a later date for beefier ones

a ford 9 inch would probably lift the front wheels of the ground for sure! wouldnt mind seeing that! the 8.8 would probably better suited. but the gears are always interchangable. can't wait to see the fabrication work.

I could be wrong, but it appears that the S800 does not have the chain drive of the earlier S models, which should make mounting a 8.8" (which is plenty for this application) fairly easy.

I am convinced, a S2000 engine in this beastie is a good idea. Are you planning on building a roll cage to hold this thing together?

only the first few S800's were chain drive and drum brakes at the front , then they went onto dicsc and a 5 link rear axle like mine

it should be so easy to copy the dimentions and make a different axle fit

my dilemma here is whether to graft on the Honda hubs on to the new axle and keep the original wheels (these wheels are very rare) or use Ford hubs and get front hubs made to accept ford wheels giving me the option of many types of wheel and availability of loads of spare wheels

that problem is a little way away yet so i will worry about that when the time comes

the chassis on these cars are plenty strong enough so a roll cage will be just for roll over protection. plus once i'm in there is not much room left for much else

Sure does, I got a few pictures of it launching at the drags.

Interesting question. Are the orginal wheels going to give you enough of a foot print with all this new power? If not, I would not feel bad about using the Ford hubs to get a bigger footprint.

i dont think the footprint will be a problem as the standard weight of a S800 coupe is 1686 lbs (765 kgs) . i don't know what mine weighs stripped out with the fibreglass panels but with the bigger engine not much more than standard i hope

i think having loads of spare wheels for track days will be better than trying to use the rare Honda alloys as they are no longer available

still, plenty of time to think about that

this one has a different axle
