We have a little nook in the shop for a jig table, small welding table and a couple grinders.

We only do tig welding, the table never gets hot and there aren;t any sparks flying around, common sense go a long ways.

Can't wait to get a big steel building in a lot of ways though.

its your call, but using equipment hot enough to melt steel in a wooden structure wouldn't help me sleep at night.

We use wooden tables with metal tops, the metal tops are spaced out with washer. Never had an issue, the wood does get hot on occasion but nothing to worry about.

Just to bring your laughter to an end, and because I'm a jackass, you should know that most stove tops are made of either cast iron or 410SS. Nothing about your stove comes anywhere close to the melting point of steel.

A true continuous hot work area has NO wood structures (tables, shelves, etc.), no flammables or combustables that aren't in a flammables cabinet (which is kept a prescribed distance from the work area), fire "proof" walls and doors that can withstand at least an hour burn, a sprinkler system, and require a 30 min. fire watch after work has finished. That said, I have seen very few true hot work areas, especially in small shops, and the danger of TIG welding is much, much less than any other hot work form.

Here is our frame work table. It has a 1 x 1 x .25 tapped grid on the top for holding jigs, something I highly recommend for at least a small area of all work tables.

He was talking about the buildings as well and that is what I was refering too. Is your house made of steel?

Good grief you guys our tables don't even get warm. Smoking is more dangerous than our tig welding. Like I said before, common sense, use it.

Same here. Hell I use a POS folding fiber board table. I simply have a 1/16" stainless sheet ontop of a 1/16" aluminum sheet.

I just wish I could use my day job table for my TIG work

one of my customers is a company that builds aerospace parts in their quality control room they have these measuring tables (i dont know what else to call them. they have machines that measure coordinates of some sort hovering above the table).

anyhow, the table top is solid granite and is about 6 or 7 inches thick.

it must weigh 10,000 lbs. lol. i cant help but think that would make a badass work bench.

We have 4 of these metal tables around the shop, they're like 10x4. Drill press, Mitler Bros. tube notcher, JD3 tube bender, belt sander, 2 bench grinders, cheap sand blast cabinet, lathe circa 1802 complete with wooden frame, Hobart plasma cutter, Oxy/Acetelene setup, band saw, chop saw and a sweet fork lift that smells like pepper (came from a pepper factory).

Few Rotary lifts, have all of the wiring/anchors setup for 3 more that we have on order.

Black Matco box my boss bought me, Lincoln Precision Tig 375, Miller Mig, Home Depot Lincoln flux-core welder, bench grinder only for tungstens and a Mustang MD-250P chassis dyno.

So a steel table with an aluminum top is the way to go ? Is there such things as copper/brass tops out there?

fairly thick since they are both really soft metals...you'd have a dent the second you hit it with a hammer
