Default ► DIY: SRS light turn off link?

Quote:
i try searching and can't find it. can someone help me. or paste the link. I was driving today and all the sudden my srs light turns on.

DIY
:

You'll need one of the following:
- SCS Service Connector. (part #07PAZ-001010A and can be purchased from Majestic Honda - H and A Accessories - or locally, if you prefer.
- A paper clip
- Small gauge speaker wire (~14-22)

In the fuse box, under the dash on the driver's side, you'll find the MES connector. (left photo below) The picture on the right is of the MES connector (or service connector)
It is a yellow connector with two wires in it that is plugged into the fuse box, unplug it and pull it down. Once you have done that, you can begin the process of erasing the memory.

NOTE: This will only reset your SRS System if what caused it to trigger has been fixed.

1. Turn the ignition off and connect the SCS Service Connector to the MES connector.

2.
Turn Ignition on. (do not start the car) The SRS indicator light will come on for about 6 seconds then go off.

3.
Disconnect SCSSC from the MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS indicator light goes off. SRS indicator light will come back on again.

4.
Reconnect SCSSC to the MES connector within 4 seconds after SRS light comes back on. The SRS indicator light will go off.

5.
Disconnect SCSSC from MES connector within 4 seconds. SRS indicator light will indicate that memory is erased by blinking 2 times.

6.
Turn ignition off, and wait 10 seconds. Start vehicle like normal and light should come on and go out like normal.

7.
Turn your car off, assuming the instructions worked and your SRS light is now off. If it does not work the first time, try it again. The timing has to be perfect.

8.
Re-plug the MES connector in. Voila!

Note: IF the SRS light comes back on (assuming you reset the SRS correctly and the light was off) then something is malfunctioning in the SRS System and you'll have to see a dealership or repair shop. (unless you can figure out which system component is failing, on your own.)

- Using a paperclip will work using the same procedure as the SCSSC.

- If you're using speaker wire, you'll need two wires. Strip both ends of each wire and plug the end of one wire into each hole of the MES Plug. (leave it in there!)
Instead of removing the speaker wires from the MES Plug, like with the SCSSC or paper clip, you'll be connecting/disconnecting the opposite bare ends of the stripped wires.

This is a compilation of other DIY's and a photo I took this morning.

so my srs light came on today in my 04 civic lx. if the light comes on, that means something is wrong right?

so should i check to see whats up, or just reset it?
everything is stock, except suspension and a sub (stock deck, sub hooked up to rear speaker).

if you didn't install anything under the seats or remove the seats w/key in ignition then just go the dealers. they will fix it for free.

My Light Came on today, first time ever, I just used the speaker wire trick, and the light stays off now, just went out for a hour drive and the light ever came on, not sure what caused the light to come on in the first place but its off now.
great DIY

to add to this, my mom took my car in for the airbag recall a week or so ago and I dont remember what the tech said, but the srs light MIGHT have had something to do with that. My mom had to take the car back a second time for them to take care of it, so i imagine it wasnt as simple as just turning the light off, but it was fixed free of charge

I made my own SCS service connector, also known as "SCS short connector." See http://sites.google.com/site/hondalioness/srs

After having done this to may car before, trying to see the indicator lamp, and pulling the SCS connector from the harness, while being stuck under the steering wheel, I like your idea of being able to comfortably see the lamp while toggling on and off instead of pulling the connector apart.

^^ Exactly. I read other reports on this and the warning from the manual that a paper clip is a bad idea because of all the juggling needed in a tight timeframe. I did not think I would be better off with the OEM tool either. Plus I figured I might be needing the tool a lot. So I built the little device above. I am working on a 2003 Civic LX which came to me with the SRS indicator light on but no other signs of an accident or airbag deployment. I messed up resetting the first time because I was trying to read the directions simultaneously. This works poorly given the 4-second windows. The second try I just toggled the switch whenever the SRS indicator light changed from off to on or vice versa, knowing to stop toggling once the light blinked twice. Resetting was a success. After driving ten miles, it has not come on again, so I am hopeful all is well with the SRS system.

You two have stubby arms or something? I have absolutely no problem holding/viewing the plug while I'm sitting in the driver's seat. Using the SRS connector from this position is extremely easy. You hold the MES plug in your right hand, the SRS connector in your left, slide it on and off while you're watching your SRS indicator on the cluster. Pretty simple.

The speaker wire is a good alternative for most people. You can choose the length, and it's only a matter of connecting/disconnecting bare wire ends. Pretty simple. This method doesn't require a toggle switch, a multimeter, the knowledge of how to use a multimeter, or a trip to salvage wires and pins.

I imagine that the paperclip method wouldn't be much harder than using the SRS. If someone has a hard time holding the paperclip without it moving around, or the prongs becoming misaligned due to their grip; you could tape the paperclip to something. Maybe the end of a popsicle stick? The idea is to have the paperclip on some sort of foundation in order to reduce (or eliminate) flex in the paperclip. And to also give the person using it a better handle on the situation.

IMO: The toggle switch idea is kinda neat. However, it may be a bit more effort than it's worth for the occasional DIY'er. I think it would be best utilized in a shop-type environment where it would be used on a more regular basis. If someone's having to reset their SRS light so often that it becomes bothersome... maybe they should fix their car!

I like to tinker, though. I may do this just for schitzengiggles.

I agree that, say, stereo speaker wire (for one) is fine here. For me, the toggle switch with wired pins device is (1) about doing the job cleanly, with confidence one is getting it right (I am still scared an airbag is going to explode in my face when I work so close to the steering wheel etc.; I follow the shop manual cautions but I do not know the engineering well enough to do more than blindly trust the shop manual, cookbook style, step-by-step); (2) like you say, for tinkerers (that is, for fun); (3) for those expecting to have to do a lot of this for whatever reason (like you say). The only experience I had previously had with SRS systems is when I added OEM cruise control to one of my Civics. The SRS wiring mixes up some with the rest of the underdash wiring, and some unplugging of SRS connectors is necessary here and there when adding cruise control.

You were supposed to disconnect your battery, before you unplugged your seats.

I don't see what the problem is. The DIY has clear, step-by-step instructions. Other people can seem to figure it out.

So my light came back on, it was off for about 3-4 since i did the reset, so i took it to a garage, they read the code, its the seat belt buckle itself thats causing the light, anyway Honda wont cover it under warrenty, and they want $230 for the part itself, i got a used one for $50 and i'll install it myself and reset the code myself.
I cant believe such a common problem exists and they wont do anything for you.
