Thanks for the picture and the fast response.
Zoomed in, the pic is a little pixelated. Is the connector in the engine bay on the firewall or in the cab under the dash? Any description of the connector I am looking for? The picture is listing a 16 pin like the main computer. |

ABS Indicator If the system is OK, the ABS indicator goes off 2 seconds after turning the ignition switch ON (II) without starting the engine, and then comes on again and goes off 2 seconds later after starting the engine. This occurs because the ABS control unit is turned on by the IG2 power source. The ABS indicator comes on when the ABS control unit detects a problem in the system. However, even though the system is operating properly, the indicator will come on under these conditions: Only the drive wheels rotate One drive wheel is stuck The vehicle goes into a spin The ABS continues to operate for a long time. The vehicle is subjected to an electrical signal disturbance To determine the actual cause of the problem, question the customer about the problem, taking the conditions into consideration. When a problem is detected and the ABS indicator comes on, there are cases when the indicator stays on until the ignition switch is turned OFF, and cases when the indicator goes off automatically when the system returns to normal. DTC 61: The ABS indicator goes off automatically when the system returns to normal. DTC 11, 13, 15, 17, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 54, or 81: The ABS indicator stays on until the ignition switch is turned OFF whether or not the system returns to normal. DTC 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 51, 52, or 53: The ABS indicator goes off when the vehicle is driven again and the system is OK after the ignition switch is turned from OFF to ON (II). Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) The memory can hold three DTCs. However, when the same DTC is detected more than once, the more recent DTC is written over the earlier one. Therefore, when the same problem is detected repeatedly, it is memorized as a single DTC. The DTCs are in the order they occurred, beginning with the most recent. The DTCs are memorized in the EEPROM (nonvolatile memory). Therefore, the memorized DTCs are not cleared when the battery is disconnected, the ignition switch is turned off, or the system returns to normal. Do the specified procedures to clear the DTCs. Self-diagnosis Self-diagnosis can be classified into two categories: Initial diagnosis: Done right after the engine starts and until the ABS indicator goes off Regular diagnosis: Done right after the initial diagnosis until the ignition switch is turned OFF When a problem is detected by self-diagnosis, the system does the following: Turns the ABS indicator on Memorizes the DTC Stops ABS control Kickback The pump motor operates when the ABS is functioning, and the fluid in the reservoir is forced out to the master cylinder, causing kickback at the brake pedal. Pump Motor The pump motor operates when the ABS is functioning. The ABS control unit checks the pump motor operation when the vehicle is started the first time after the ignition switch is turned ON (II). You may hear the motor operate at this time, but it is normal.[/i]</TD></TR></TABLE> |

That is good info. Thanks for the help.
I still need to pull the DTC to diagnose the problem though. ABS light has been on for a few weeks so I know I have some stored code(s). I would just throw a meter on the speed sensors but I have no data for them so locating the access port to the computer is paramount before I can move any further. I have searched the web and this site to no avail. Looking at your picture it seems that the DLC is the same as the main computer connector. Am I mistaken in thinking that there are two different access points to pull codes from the two computers or are they one in the same just different pins to jump in the same connector? |

On the alldata website i cannot find nowhere on how to pull the codes. ...

With the ignition switch OFF, connect the Honda PGM Tester (A) to the 16P Data Link Connector (DLC) (B) under the driver's side of the dashboard. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and follow the prompts on the PGM Tester to display the DTC(s) on the screen. After determining the DTC, refer to the DTC Troubleshooting Index. NOTE: See the Honda PGM Tester user's manual for specific instructions.

That will only pull engine codes (OBD) though. Now you see my delima for trying to pull ABS codes.
There is a lack of info out there for these newer models. I may have to break down and actually take my car to the dealer for the first time since I bought it to have them pull the ABS code. Gotta love it.

interesting, mine is on because of my 5lug conversion, i ordered some abs sensors for the fronts, hopefully the light goes away but if not i'd need to check and see what code it's throwing so i can fix it...

Ok. I am on the brink of insanity here.
Pretty sure now that I can pull ABS codes from the 16Pin DLC by jumping the SCS pins (if they actually exist for the abs) integrated into the 16P DLC. I need to know which pins they are. I found a service manual for an '03 EP3 (should be close enough for the civic ex as far as wiring is concerned) but it does not have a good wiring diagram describing the DLC and its terminal specifics. The service manual keeps telling me to use my honda PGM tester and specifies nothing about the circuits it manipulates. Arggggggg!!! Any takers here? |

if u short pin 9 (service check signal / brown) and pin 4 (boddy ground / brown/yel) on the OBD2 plug, the MIL, airbag and ABS light will blink DTC's.

You are the MAN!!! That is the very simple little thing I needed to get the job done and it worked like a charm. I was able to pull the code and found that my RR speed sensor cable was actually severed and thus the touble code. I patched it up and all is well and the ABS light is out and my brakes are FULLY functional again.
Thanks. I think I will post a quick how-to for future reference. I know I spent at least 8 hours researching this light and how to pull the code and about 30 minutes actually fixing it.

For those of you who ever want to know why that pesky ABS light is iluminated pulling the code is quite easy.
There is no spearate SCS connector in the '03 Civic like on the older models. You must jump two terminals in the DLC which is located under the drivers dash by the center panel. Can't miss it (16PIN white computer connector looking thing). With the IGN off jump pins 9 and 4 and turn the IGN on and count the codes. I used a troubleshooting tree from an EP3 service manul but most of the setup is similar and applicable to the Civic EX. I know this is probably a big DUH for a lot of people but I spent a lot of time looking for an SCS connector that was frequently referenced on many internet sites but did not exist in my model year. Further, I found it difficult to find any data specific to the newer models, so I hope future readers will be able to benefit form this. Good luck. |
