Turbo manifold question.

I am going to be building a turbo manifold for a 2jzge soon and I am kind of stuck as to what material to use. I have been reading on here that Sch 10 and 40 is the way to go, but I also read 16g should work. Since I have my own bender ideally I would love to make something out of 16 guage, but I am not sure how reliable it would be. I read on here that if you brace it will be ok, what would be a proper way to brace it?

build a brace that would support the full weight of the turbo ( it would hold the turbo in position, if you were to remove the manifold) ive seen some real nice looking triangulated, heim joint type braces in use. on our racecars(we use thick ass pipe) we have a single tube heim joint type brace, which supports the turbo from the bottom

Yeah, the ideal brace is one that allows the turbo to hang from a heim joint. This way the manifold is not supporting the weight of the turbo, but it is free to expand and contract easily since the turbo can "swing" on the heim joints.

what would happen if you built a brace on the bottom of the turbo to motor. Something like factory turbocharged cars have.

I do it this way and never had a problem the past two years.

i know a brace is super easy to make from scrap, but some people like to just buy it and have it look nice....

I'm guessing you used 16ga? Its what the 'baller' manifolds are on some Evo's, its just more touchy when it comes to weld quality and bracing. Since you have 50% more runners than a Honda, it also gives it that much mroe ability to carry weight.

I have to say it looks like a well-done job. Every time I look at my friend's IS300, I wondered if one could keep the OEM TB location and fit a turbo in - I always figured it'd be easier to make your own plenum for the runners like they do on lots of SC300's That must be a wonderful DD car, long-runner IM with a non-oversized turbo on a big I6. *drool*

Thank you. Yeah it's 16g and yeah having 2 more tubes helps with the weight.

Now that I have the turbo on, I don't think I can live without it. I get full 7psi at 3500 RPMs so when I need the power it's right there, when I don't the car feels 100% stock and is very quiet.

I want to test it out for the next few weeks see what, if anything, will go wrong and if all looks good I am going to start selling these kits.

I've been curious for a while since I've decided to start making turbo manifolds for myself and others.

how the hell do you weld around where the pipes meet the collector? I can weld two pipes maybe 3 but I can't figure out how I can weld the rest.

I mean this.. How do you reach to weld around the ends of the pipes that meet the collector??:

When I made my manifold, I made sure I would have enough room to weld the last tube. I did this by designing the collector just right (angle and spacing). The last one is always the hardest.
